The Los Angeles Lakers acquired D’Angelo Russell at the trade deadline this past season in the hopes of getting a quality starter for their point guard position. While D’Angelo Russell played well during the regular season, it is clear that his postseason performances left a lot to be desired.
There have been a lot of rumors that have suggested the Los Angeles Lakers want to move on from D’Angelo Russell. A recent report from Zach Lowe of ESPN revealed that there are still people on the Lakers who want to keep D’Angelo Russell, however.
“I actually think there are corners of the organization that would still like D’Angelo Russell back just because they have a void at that position,” ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on his The Lowe Post podcast. “They need a point guard.”
Though upgrading at the point guard position would be optimal, D’Angelo Russell is still a solid option at that position if all else fails. Acquiring a player like Kyrie Irving might be unrealistic at this point, and re-signing Russell could be beneficial, whether it is for his play on the court or to use his contract as a trade chip later on.
This regular season, D’Angelo Russell averaged 17.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 6.1 APG for the Los Angeles Lakers. Those are still solid numbers, and we’ll see what sort of contract he ends up getting in free agency.
LeBron James Reportedly Wants The Los Angeles Lakers To Replace D’Angelo Russell With Kyrie Irving
Team decisions are often influenced by their stars, and it seems as though LeBron James has a course of action in mind for the Los Angeles Lakers. A previous report revealed that he wants the Lakers to replace D’Angelo Russell with his former co-star, Kyrie Irving.
“LeBron James wants the Lakers to replace Russell with Irving, sources told Heavy Sports. However, Los Angeles doesn’t have the cap space to sign Irving, who is looking for a max contract,” reported Ashish Mathur of Heavy Sports.
Though there are some pathways through which the team can feasibly acquire Kyrie Irving, that would require them to give up a lot of their depth. We will see what the Los Angeles Lakers do in the future, but the primary goal should always be to build a team that competes for a championship.
