With Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors returning to the NBA Finals, the question regarding where he ranks among the all-time greats has become a hotly contested topic among NBA circles. The Warriors guard already had a very impressive resume, and he is now climbing up the ranks even more.
Some have started questioning if Curry is on his way to surpassing his former teammate Kevin Durant, but Stephen A. Smith vehemently disagrees with that notion. Smith had previously said that everybody and their mother knew that Durant was better than Curry when they played together and he doubled down here. He acknowledged that Curry already has a better resume than Durant, but he believes that Curry doesn’t compare to Durant when it comes to individual ability:
“He’s already surpassed him in terms of resume. I’m talking about individual ability, he’s not Kevin Durant. We have to stop this nonsense. It has to stop. It has to stop right now. Steph Curry is the greatest shooter we’ve ever seen. What is Kevin Durant? Chopped Liver? He’s 6’11” with a 7’6″ wingspan…. There is nothing that Steph Curry does that Kevin Durant can’t do.”
That is quite the bold claim at the end there that there is nothing that Steph does that Durant can’t. That might be a bit of a stretch as KD definitely doesn’t have the range from beyond the arc as Curry does. Putting that aside, as Smith said, Curry already has a better resume than KD, but is he a better player? It is hard to say that, and another title wouldn’t necessarily swing the pendulum in Curry’s favor either.
While the debates will rage on about this till the end of time, we’d doubt Steph loses much sleep over it. He cares most about winning championships and the Warriors have a great chance here to add a 4th NBA title to their trophy case in the last 8 seasons.
