The GOAT debate is a never-ending discussion around NBA circles, and many fans have different opinions on that one. Michael Jordan and LeBron James are constantly mentioned as the greatest player of all time, but other legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and even Kobe Bryant have been considered the NBA GOAT.
For ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, the answer is pretty clear, as he places MJ at the top of his personal list, but LeBron James ranks second, too, showing how great the King is in the eyes of the controversial reporter.
Smith recently made a case for LeBron as the second greatest player of all time, surpassing other great names to sit at that spot, right behind His Airness, who looks immovable for the veteran journalist.
Stephen A. Smith Explains Why LeBron Is The No. 2 Greatest Player Of All Time
For Smith, even though he doesn’t have the same resume as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Bill Russell, LeBron has become the second-greatest player of all time after everything he’s done for the game during his 20-year career.

“I don’t have LeBron over MJ. But I will tell you that I’ve got him number two. He doesn’t have the resume of a Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar] or a Bill Russell. But I consider him number 2 on the Mount Rushmore in the history of basketball.”
Stephen A. also praised LeBron for the way he’s taken care of his body and his incredible shape at age 38. He’s doing things nobody has done before, yet people keep taking him for granted, but Smith has had enough of that.
It’s pretty obvious that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had a better career than LeBron James in terms of accolades, but the King is close to dethroning the legendary center as the top scorer in NBA history, which would place him at the top of many rankings around the league.
Some people like Shaquille O’Neal think that the scoring record will give LeBron the edge over Michael Jordan, but for Smith, MJ will stay there for a million years and more.
