The Golden State Warriors have their eyes set on getting back on top in the 2023-24 season, and Stephen Curry has revealed the identity the team must have for that.
“A smart basketball team that is connected, right? Coach has been saying that since he first got back from Team USA,” Curry said. “Talking about our team we need to be connected, we need to be in a position where we all complement each other when we’re out there on the floor.”
Curry praised the additions the Warriors have made this offseason and is expecting Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody to continue to develop. The 35-year-old realizes that time is not on their side, however.
“It’s going to be by committee like it always has when we win,” Curry added. “But I think a high-IQ basketball team that understands we’re not going to have too many more cracks at this, so we have to figure out how to do it and do it now.”
(starts at 1:23 mark):
The Warriors are one of the greatest dynasties in modern NBA history with four championships, but all good things must come to an end. They know they only have a few more shots at winning another championship and need to make every season count.
Curry spoke about the need to be a connected group, and they were anything but that in 2022-23 after Draymond Green infamously punched Jordan Poole. We’ll never know how that season would have panned out had it never happened, but the Warriors would feel they could have won it all if not for that. It is what makes the campaign such a huge missed opportunity for them.
Steve Kerr Believes The Warriors Are A Very High IQ Group
On the topic of connection, head coach Steve Kerr pointed to it being the area where he failed the Warriors last season. It makes sense, then, that he has been stressing the need for connectivity to the group this time around, as Curry mentioned.
The two also seem to be in line when it comes to the team’s identity, with Kerr saying the Warriors are a very high-IQ team.
“I think the job the front office did by adding Dario really connects the game for us. Adding a big who can shoot, space, and punish people inside with his strength and size. Cory Joseph hasn’t played yet but he’s a very smart player and one of the top guys in the league when it comes to assist-to-turnover ratio. Chris, goes without saying, his intelligence. This feels like a real high IQ team and they’re showing that early on.”
The Warriors did make a lot of mental mistakes last season and even led the league with 16.3 turnovers per game. That has to change, and the hope would be that the addition of Chris Paul would help matters.
The Chris Paul Experiment
The Warriors’ season will ultimately be decided by this Chris Paul experiment for me. They are going to be one of the better teams in the Western Conference regardless of how well he plays, but if they want to get over the line and win another championship, then he has to be a great fit with this group.
One of the big issues last season, apart from the turnovers and the locker room drama, was that their offense was stuck in mud whenever Curry, who averaged 29.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game, wasn’t on the court. Paul should help on that front, and if he can consistently help them stay afloat in those non-Curry minutes, that’d be a real game-changer for Golden State.
Questions remain, though, regarding his fit with the Warriors, but Paul remains confident that things will work out.
