Steve Kerr Explains What Warriors Might Do With High 2020 Draft Pick

3 Min Read

The Golden State Warriors aren’t usually in the business of picking high in the NBA Draft.

The past few seasons, they’ve been one of the best teams in the NBA and the combined forces of Steph, Klay, Draymond, and Kevin Durant ensured they would never be bad enough to earn a high pick in the Draft.

But with them gone, a new reality has set in for the team — if even just for one season. They will likely have a topp pick this year and while many aren’t sure what they’re going to do with it, Steve Kerr and the team have a few ideas.

He layed them all out in a chat with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami on the TK Podcast.

“We’re excited about having a high pick and there definitely are some guys who are very talented,” Steve Kerr told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami.

“This, obviously, is Bob’s (Warriors general manager Bob Myers) world. We’re gonna pick who Bob and the scouts feel like we should pick. But what we have to weigh is — are we looking for a player who is gonna help immediately because we feel like we’ve got this window the next few years? Are we gonna use the pick in a trade to try to trade for a vet who is ready to help us win right away?

“Or do you look at it long term — because you know you want to be good for the next decade — and you take a young player with a lot of potential who’s maybe not ready to help us win yet but you feel like could be a great player down the road? Those are all options and that’s what we have to figure out as an organization.”

There’s obviously a number of different things the Warriors could do. With their guys coming back next season, it might be in their best interest to either find a guy who can make an immediate impact, or trade for a guy who does.

Then again, picking the guy with the most potential and keeping him helps give the team some insurance for the future.

It’s a tough call, but any team would love to be in their sitauation right now.
