Victor Wembanyama is hard at work in the gym as he prepares to play a big role in the 2024 Olympics hosted in his home country while hoping to take a leap in the NBA as a sophomore and lead the Spurs to the playoffs again. Wemby’s trainer Melvin Sanders shared videos of the 7’4″ French center working hard in the gym to add some muscle to his slender frame.
After seeing the videos, fans have compared Wembanyama’s muscular growth over his rookie season through pictures and are getting excited about what the future could hold for the star.
Wembanyama had one of the best rookie seasons in NBA history, becoming one of few unanimous Rookie of the Year winners ever along with becoming the only player to be named to an All-Defensive First Team and be a Defensive Player of the Year finalist as a rookie.
His averages of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks are incredibly impressive, with everyone assuming he’ll only get better with more experience. To maximize his level of play, Wemby has to add muscle and ensure he is durable enough to go through an 82-game season and a playoff run after that.
The Spurs load-managed Wemby as a rookie, playing him in 71 games while averaging 29.7 minutes per game. They won’t be able to do that as winning expectations grow for a franchise that made 22 postseasons in a row but hasn’t been to the Playoffs since 2019, the longest active drought in the Western Conference.
The Spurs Want To Compete For A Playoff Spot Next Season
Wembanyama’s talent has been validated in his first season in the NBA, with the French center entering the league as a DPOY finalist. With his incredible talents on both ends of the ball, the Spurs are reportedly looking to be competitive immediately, with only Wembanyama and Devin Vassell as untouchable prospects on the roster, according to Jonathan Givony.
“Everything I hear is that they want to be competitive next year, they want to be in the playoffs. They’re not looking to make this a 2-3 year process. I’ve heard nobody in the roster is untouchable except Victor [Wembanyama] and Devin Vassell,”
Givony also claims that the Spurs’ desire to be competitive immediately could lead to them trading picks in the near future, with the picks possibly in play to make a Darius Garland trade happen.
“They want to be competitive next year and that’s why I think they will be aggressive with those picks. Maybe they’re looking to trade for a veteran. Is someone like Darius Garland someone they look at?”
It’s clear the Spurs will look to solidify their franchise point guard soon with Garland not being the only name they’ve been linked to. They’ve also been heavily discussed as a home for Trae Young. The Spurs have over $40 million in cap space and a bag full of future draft assets, so they could move in whatever direction they choose to give Wemby the best chance at winning.
