It didn’t take a whole lot of time for Victor Wembanyama to get embroiled in a bit of controversy after coming over to the U.S., and he really wasn’t even at fault for it. Last week, his security guard happened to hit Britney Spears in the face when the pop idol approached Wembanyama from behind and it caused quite a stir.

The Frenchman then got a lot of stick for not apologizing and his agent, Bouna Ndiaye, told Marc Spears of Andscape that the whole situation was a good ‘Welcome to America’ moment for his client.

“The Britney Spears [incident] was a very good ‘Welcome [to] America’ moment,” Ndiaye said. “Small in a sense, but big in a sense. That was nothing. But there was so much noise for nothing and it turned into something … He was just walking. He didn’t do anything. But it shows you in America, everything is much bigger than anywhere else in the world.”

Whether it was something or nothing really depends on who you ask. Spears and especially her followers were furious over the incident, to say the least. She demanded an apology, while her husband wanted the guard punished, but he will not be charged for the incident.

There are many, though, who don’t consider this to be a huge deal, but we know by now, that every story in the U.S. tends to be blown up when celebrities are involved. As Ndiaye said, Wembanyama got a taste of what it is going to be like in the country.

Victor Wembanyama Is Going To Be Taking A Bit Of A Break From The Media

This Spears incident, combined with all the media duties that he had to fulfill since coming over, seemed to have drained the Frenchman quite a bit. He stated after his dominant showing in his second Summer League game that he plans to disappear from the media for a couple of months.

The San Antonio Spurs also shut him down for the rest of the Summer League, so he is going to have some peace of mind for a while. That microscope is going to be right back on him, though, when the regular season starts, and it’ll be interesting to see how he copes with it.
