The Golden State Warriors followed up their Finals appearance with one of the worst regular-season performances in recent history. Injuries and offseason departures made the team a shell of themselves and they finished dead last in the NBA in terms of win-loss record — but it may have resulted in something big.
As it stands, the Dubs are almost guaranteed a lottery pick to pair alongside their returning stars next year. And while many have debated on who they might select, the Warriors may choose to trade it.
“If the Warriors land the No. 1 pick in the draft, they’ll be open to trading it,” Letourneau wrote, as quoted by NBC Sports. “But if Golden State doesn’t receive a worthy offer, it would likely take (Anthony) Edwards with the top selection, according to a league source.”
Obviously, a top pick in this draft would demand significant compensation. The Warriors would only consider giving it up for a top tier player.
In this case, stars on current lottery teams (Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker, etc.) seem the most likely candidates in a potential deal.
Either way, don’t expect a repeat of what we saw in San Francisco next year. The Warriors will be back with a vengeance that will, inevitably, include some unfamiliar faces.
