There have been some massive performances this season in the NBA. Donovan Mitchell scored a whopping 70 points, and Luka Doncic recorded a 60-point-20-rebound triple-double. The league is seeing historic records broken left, right, and center, but Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game still stands far above all.

Wilt Chamberlain amazingly scored 100 points in a single game against the New York Knicks in March of 1962. The Philadelphia Warriors beat the Knicks 169-147 in that game, and it quickly became the most legendary display by any player ever. And while many are still in awe of the achievement, Wilt Chamberlain spoke later in his life, saying he was embarrassed by it

“The 100-point game will never be as important to me as it is to some other people. That’s because I’m embarrassed by it. After I got into the 80s, I pushed for 100 and it destroyed the game because I took shots that I normally never would. I was not real fluid. I mean, 63 shots? You take that many shots on the playground and no one ever wants you on their team again.”

And while it’s understandable that Wilt felt this way, there are too many legendary stories around it. And one of those is how Chamberlain made Knicks players drive him home after the game.

Wilt Chamberlain Made Knicks Players Drive Him Home After Scoring 100 Against Them

Wilt Chamberlain had an interview with the legendary Bob Costas in 1991, where he spoke about a lot of his incredible life. During that, he recounted the story of how he made Knicks players drive him home after the 100-point game.

(starts at 2:59 minutes)

“The thing I can remember the most was just the trip back. I asked the Coach, I’m living in New York and could I go back with some of the Knicks who were driving… it’s a 3-hour ride. And he said of course you can. And I had a friend… who was playing with the New York Knicks, their star forward.

“And another guy named Cleveland Buckner, who was sitting in the back seat in another guy and they let me sit in the front seat next to the driver, Willy. And I immediately went to sleep, but I would wake up and they were talking about the game. And they kept saying, ‘Can you believe this SOB scored 100 points against us?”

It takes an intense superstar to score 100 points against a team and get them to drop him home. But that’s the kind of larger-than-life figure Wilt Chamberlain was. This story just goes to show that he dominated his opponents in just about any way that we can imagine.
