The 2023 NBA Draft looks stacked at the minute, many players like Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, and Scoot Henderson are expected to potentially grow into superstars.

But until they play in the NBA, there is no way to know how exactly they will perform. Many highly-touted young players have failed at the highest level, and Charles Barkley has given them a harsh dose of that reality.

“Nobody knows how to play in the NBA at 18, 19 years old,” Barkley said. “They played their whole life on talent. They just played their whole career on talent. You’re not getting probably great coaching in high school. You’re getting good coaching in college, but you’re better than 99 percent of the players.

“When you get to the NBA, you ain’t better than nobody. You can’t be a great player unless you know how to play. Any kid who thinks he’s gonna come to the NBA right now says, ‘I’m gonna outrun LeBron (James) or Giannis (Antetokounmpo) or Devin Booker or Jimmy Butler or Trae Young.’ They’re like, ‘I’m gonna out-talent those guys.’ They’re just nuts. You gotta learn how to play.”

Playing against the world’s best players in the NBA is vastly different from playing in college or smaller leagues. The jump is massive and the true superstars are on an entirely different level to everyone else. Many players who were just drafted have said they would like to dunk on LeBron James, for example, but that is vastly easier said than done.

Victor Wembanyama Has The Perfect Attitude In This Situation

A lot of the young stars coming into the league didn’t need this reminder from Barkley, though. For example, Victor Wembanyama has already displayed the perfect attitude for the incoming rookies to have as they enter the NBA

“The most important is to not step on the court being too humble,” he said of his mentality for the next professional chapter. “You gotta be humble enough — to be able to respect the game — but if you step on a court too humble and scared, you can’t do anything.”

A big part of making it as a superstar in the NBA is having the belief that you can do it. If these young stars can respect their opponents without backing down from any challenges, there is no ceiling on what they can achieve. The future of the NBA is more exciting than ever.
