As the 17x Champs, the Los Angeles Lakers have seen more success than any team in basketball history not named the Celtics. Every year, every season, the Lakers are relevant in some way and even when they are not, it’s never long before they bounce back and welcome a superstar back into the fold.

But if you ask NBA swingman Paul George which Los Angeles team a championship would mean more to nowadays, he’ll answer with the Clippers.

As a franchise with a rather pathetic history, the Clips haven’t yet had their moment of glory, but that could change this season with a healthy Kawhi and Paul George. So when PG was asked about winning a chip with his current team, he was confident in saying that it would mean more than winning a championship with the Lakers.

It was a highly controversial statement that has drawn a lot of intense reactions across the NBA community.

Shannon Sharpe Fires Back At PG’s Comments

Among the many voices to voice their disapproval of the take was FOX Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe, who took it upon himself to unleash an angry rant on Undisputed.

“Why are you talking about the Lakers? You’re not with them. Why would you say a championship with the Lakers? And who is to say you’re gonna win one either way? He makes it seem like it’s a foregone conclusion… Hold on Paul. Game 7 vs Denver: he was 4/16 and 2/11 from three. Game 5 at home against the Suns: 6/15 and 1/6 from three. Playoff P-E-E. Shhh. You’re not him. You remember what he did in Indiana? You remember OKC? Russ went for 44 and he had 5. Is this the guy talking about a parade?”

Admittedly, Shannon isn’t the most unbiased source when it comes to LA basketball. As a notorious LeBron supporter and avid Lakers watcher, he’s always going to give an edge to the Purple and Gold, especially when it comes to their city rivals.

Still, it’s hard to deny Shannon’s point. For a guy who has done so little during his time in L.A., one would think he’d be too focused on helping his 33-28 Clippers avoid the play-in to talk about winning a chip as a Laker.

This season, PG will have to do more than just talk to earn the respect of the fans. He and Kawhi will have to break the ceiling and bring home a championship for all the haters to be silenced once and for all.
