DeMar DeRozan Responds To Lakers Trade Rumors: “Damn, My Hometown Team Want Me?”

With feelings of unrest growing in San Antonio, DeMar DeRozan has been the subject of many trade rumors these past few weeks, with many believing it’s only a matter of time before he ultimately leaves the franchise.

Naturally, the Lakers have emerged as potential suitors in these trade talks and, whether they get him or not, it’s clear there is at least some interest from the Purple and Gold on the idea of bringing in the San Antonio star.

When asked to respond to the Lakers rumors, DeRozan himself seemed open to the idea, telling Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on “All the Smoke” podcast that he considers it an honor.

“Without a doubt. You always have them dreams of doing it, you know what I mean? For me it’s just I’ve learned being in the league so long that you always want to be wanted… So when you see things about teams wanting you, you can’t feel a certain type of way. You’d better feel good about it because there’s some motherf—ers that’s not wanted. You don’t want to be that person.

“So to be wanted by a championship team that just came off a championship, to see that, how could you not feel some type of way? Especially me, being from L.A., it’s like ‘damn, my hometown team want me? They just came off a championship and they want me?’ It’s definitely crazy to be able to see that, but anybody knows that whatever jersey I got on, I’m gonna lay it out there on the line and represent in the best way I can.”

FOX Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe recently said he liked the thought of the Lakers bringing in DeMar, but others aren’t so sold. The 31-year-old forward has never been a great three-point shooter and has a bad track record of playoff losses.

Still, DeMar brings a lot to the table for LA as a finisher, mid-range maestro, and ball handler.

The Lakers will have to decide for themselves how they value the 4x All-Star, and if it’s high enough to warrant giving up much of their depth for him.
