‘The Last Dance’ was a huge hit for the NBA community. The documentary featured amazing moments and commentary from, arguably, the best team ever assembled.
Considering its widespread success, it’s no surprise that similar documentaries are also in the works, set to feature many other prominent teams, players, and moments throughout basketball history.
Among them is a series called ‘Winning Time’ by HBO, which will give a new perspective on the Showtime Lakers. It’s a highly anticipated program that many fans are excited about watching.
For some reason, Magic Johnson is not one of them. In a chat with TMZ, he revealed his disdain for the upcoming show about his former team:
“No, we got different shows coming out,” Magic tells us. “I got one, then you got Jeanie Buss got one on Showtime coming out.”
“Those are the ones I’m looking forward to. I’m not looking forward to it. I’m going to leave it at that.”
The Showtime Lakers were a dominant force through the 1980s. The nickname is not only a reference to the glitz and glamour of the L.A. lifestyle but also a reference to the team’s play, which involved an exciting run-and-gun style of basketball.
Magic Johnson was the main star of that era in Lakers history, and he went on to win 5 NBA Championships before retiring for the first time in 1991.
While Showtime may not have technically been as successful as the 90s Bulls, the team achieved extraordinary greatness and deserves to be celebrated and remembered for what they were able to do.
It will be really interesting to see what HBO does with the team’s story, and if it will get people talking in the same way that The Last Dance did.
