Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has openly stated that the team needs to bring in a center and his former teammate Dwight Howard doesn’t think it’s too hard to find one. Howard took to X on Friday to suggest he would be open to a reunion.
“It ain’t that hard to find a center.”
Howard has campaigned for another chance with the Lakers in the past as well but to no avail. The 39-year-old might be hoping they give him one now but it’s unlikely.
Howard last played in the NBA in the 2021-22 season with the Lakers, averaging 6.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. The eight-time All-Star has been looking for another opportunity in the league ever since, but no doors have opened for him. He has played in Taiwan and Dubai in recent years as a result and it looks like his NBA career is well and truly over.
If Howard were anywhere near his best right now, he would be a terrific addition to the Lakers. He was one of the best defenders and rebounders in the league for much of his career (three DPOY awards and five rebounding titles) and that’s exactly the type of player they need.
Even a past-his-prime but not washed-up Howard would be a good addition, as was the case in 2019. He was, of course, a key role player on that title-winning 2019-20 team but isn’t nearly as good now as he was back then.
A fan roasted Howard for that post on X by stating that DeMarcus Cousins was indeed available. He responded with a couple more options and claimed he was just trolling.
“Boogie, Javale (McGee), (Jahlil) Okafor, Kenneth (Faried)… it’s a lot of options out there don’t mind me I just be trolling.”
It’s unlikely the Lakers go for any of the names Howard mentioned. There’s a reason why none of them are playing in the NBA at present.
LeBron James And Anthony Davis Believe Lakers Aren’t Far From Being A Contender
The Lakers are currently fifth in the West with a 24-18 record and their two stars want the team to be aggressive on the trade market. NBA insider Shams Charania reported Davis and LeBron James believe the Lakers can be contenders with one or two more pieces.
“From my understanding, both LeBron James and Anthony Davis feel that this team with the Lakers, which is now a certified playoff team, they’re not, as of right now a play-in team…”
“They feel like if they get another piece or two, they can be legitimate title contenders. When your best players feel that way, I think the Lakers will be active, they will continue to do their due diligence. They have two first-round picks they can play with. The value on those picks is immense.”
The Lakers front office has been quite reluctant to trade those future first-round picks and it will be interesting to see if they change their stance now. The Feb. 6 trade deadline is less than two weeks away, so we’ll find the answer to that question soon enough.
