In a chat with ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, longtime NBA veteran Chris Paul opened up on his NBA career. At 40 years old, Paul is living his best life which includes attending fashion shows and leading a young playoff team.
“First time doing fashion shows, been wanting to for a long time. But with the summer, kids, AAU basketball it’s kind of wild to be doing that and playing games at the same time. But I’m grateful, definitely grateful.”
LeBron James and Kevin Durant are often pinned as the greatest examples of NBA longevity but Chris Paul isn’t too far behind. Paul, 39, isn’t in the prime of his career but he’s carved out an important role for himself on a young Spurs team that is looking to make noise in the West. In an amazing feat of longevity, Chris has become a real difference-maker on the court due to hard work and incredible discipline.
“A lot of hard work and grit. A lot of sacrifice and perseverance more than anything. A very strong support system, a family. It’s fun and truly a blessing to still be able to do this.”
Chris also spoke up about his young teammate Victor Wembanyama. As a young star in the making, Victor still has a lot to learn and Chris has been doing his best to help him navigate his newfound fame.
“It’s different,” said Chris on playing with Victor. “At this point in my career to get a chance to be part of Vic’s process I’m grateful because I would have been just like a lot of fans who are just like ‘Man this Wembanyama kid is good.’ So now to get to know him is different. He’s a better person than a player and you can’t say that about too many guys.”
Starting with the Hornets in 2005, Chris Paul began his career as one of the top young prospects in the game and he developed into one of the greatest point guards and playmakers in modern NBA history. For his career, which has spanned nearly two decades, Paul is averaging 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game on 41.6% shooting.
The Spurs fell on tough times after the end of the Tim Duncan era. They were struggling for years before they hit the jackpot with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Victor’s arrival has changed everything for the Spurs but they still don’t have enough to challenge the NBA elites.
With averages of 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, Paul has been doing his best to help the Spurs maximize their talent and under his leadership, they’ve been a much-improved team.
At 20-22, they rank 12th in the West but are just 1.5 games back from the final play-in spot. With Victor, Paul, and head coach Gregg Popovich leading the way, they have a chance to make some noise and surprise a lot of people this year.
But no matter how far the Spurs go, Paul is grateful for this experience and he’s happy to play such a prominent role for a young team on the rise. Hopefully, he can stick around for longer to help this team reach a whole new level.
