Could the Lakers be NBA contenders this season? LeBron James and Anthony Davis believe they have a chance. According to Shams Charania, who spoke on the matter on the Pat McAfee show, noted that the Lakers are doing their work. Both James and Davis want to see them make some moves, as they feel this team is just a few moves away from being a legitimate title contender.
“The Lakers are doing their due diligence to see what is out there. The problem is, in terms of the trade market, who out there can make that difference? I think LeBron James and Anthony Davis, your two star players, they want to see some urgency, some activity with the Lakers and their front office. Go out there and get another piece or two.”
“From my understanding, both LeBron James and Anthony Davis feel that this team with the Lakers, which is now a certified playoff team, they’re not, as of right now a play-in team…”
“They feel like if they get another piece or two, they can be legitimate title contenders. When your best players feel that way, I think the Lakers will be active, they will continue to do their due diligence. They have two first-round picks they can play with. The value on those picks is immense.”
This statement is similar to the one that Anthony Davis made to Charania during their recent interview together. For his part, Davis doubled down on his comments, explaining why going out and trading for a center, which he told Shams, is important and can help the team improve massively going forward.
As for LeBron James, he has done his best to send his message to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and the front office. Both James and Davis are reportedly worried about the team’s ability to make moves to improve their roster.
Will The Lakers Make A Trade Soon?
There is a lot of ambiguity surrounding the Lakers’ willingness to make a trade ahead of the upcoming February 6th deadline. Rob Pelinka and the front office have shown a reluctance to part ways with their trade assets, in particular their first-round picks, to make a deal.
Even their recent trade to land Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton only saw the Lakers give up second-round picks.
In fairness to Pelinka, the rest of the league is certainly not willing to play ball with the Lakers. It was reported that the Lakers are definitely interested in Utah Jazz’s Walker Kessler, but the Jazz have set a very high asking price for him, one that fans presume the Lakers will balk at paying.
But if the Lakers are serious about making a trade for Kessler, one NBA insider came up with a bombshell mock trade idea that would see them land him, along with three other players, which would help them become instant title contenders.
Another trade we came up with sees them finally land a traditional point guard and two key upgrades courtesy of the Trail Blazers.
Whatever the plan for the Lakers is, time is running out. With under two weeks to go before the February 6th trade deadline, the Lakers must act quickly to make sure they can improve their team.
