A lot of basketball players are usually talked about for their prowess on the court, but there’s a lot of players who make the news for things such as large off-court purchases. It looks as though Stephen Curry is the most recent player to receive attention for that reason.

Stephen Curry has recently spent $180,000 on a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT (Non-Fungible-Token). The NFT in question is a piece of digital artwork featuring a randomly generated ape. Bibhu Pattnaik of Benzinga provided some details about the purchase.

Stephen Curry, who plays point guard for the Golden State Warriors, has bought a Bored Ape Yacht Club for 55 Ethereum or $180,000. Soon after the purchase, he updated his Twitter profile picture to his ape.

Curry’s bored ape has blue fur, zombie eyes, and is wearing a tweed suit. The last two are particularly rare attributes in the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), with only 3% of apes having zombie eyes and 1% of apes wearing tweed suits.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club consists of 10,000 randomly generated NFTs built on Ethereum, and it is one of the current hottest NFT in the market. The bored apes’ NFTs have over 170 different characteristics like outfits, headwear, fur, facial expressions, and more.

According to the BAYC website, the NFT is also a “membership card” to the Yacht Club, and there are some perks that come along with it. Stephen Curry also joined the Yacht Club’s Discord.

Your Bored Ape doubles as your Yacht Club membership card, and grants access to members-only benefits, the first of which is access to THE BATHROOM, a collaborative graffiti board. Future areas and perks can be unlocked by the community through roadmap activation.

While the majority of us can’t afford to spend $180,000 on unique digital artwork, it seems as though Stephen Curry thinks that this NFT is a good investment. Time will tell if turns out that way, but a lot of Stephen Curry’s off-court ventures generally work out well.
