With a superteam forming in Brooklyn this season, there were many people that thought that they would be the ones to hoist the 2020-21 NBA championship trophy. However, the team that ended up winning the championship was the Milwaukee Bucks, a team that has won by slowly and steadily building up a championship foundation. Neither approach is necessarily wrong, as we’ve seen both yield championships across the league.
An article by Joe Vardon of The Athletic revealed that Kevin Durant has recently called the 2020-21 Milwaukee Bucks a “dynasty”, and pointed out how there’s been a sense of “continuity” around the team which led him to make the statement. The Milwaukee Bucks have been a playoff team for a few years now, but it is the continuous addition of players around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton that has allowed them to enjoy championship success in 2020-21.
And then Milwaukee forming somewhat of a dynasty with that team. I know it’s the first chip and a lot of people call you a dynasty after a few, but the continuity of that team is something that’s impressive and how they continue to build and add and now they’re champions, and you can appreciate that.
Sometimes, there are teams that win after acquiring that one missing piece, but with a solid core already present. For the Milwaukee Bucks, that missing piece seemed to be Jrue Holiday. The Milwaukee Bucks notably gave up a lot of draft compensation in the deal, but that has definitely paid off with a championship win. Most fans wouldn’t call this Milwaukee team a dynasty as of now, but one can see Kevin Durant’s reasoning.
It is great to see Kevin Durant pay respects to the 2020-21 NBA champions, and he notably told Giannis Antetokounmpo to “Go and get you one” after Antetokounmpo beat him in the second round of the playoffs. Things will be harder for the Milwaukee Bucks next season though, as the Brooklyn Nets superteam will be back with a vengeance. Next season should be extremely exciting, and perhaps we’ll see the Bucks and the Nets face off once again in the playoffs.
