Stephen Curry has had enough time to rest this offseason after his Golden State Warriors failed to make the 2021 NBA playoffs. This summer will bring a new challenge to Team USA after their 2019 fiasco in Spain.
Plenty of players vowed to represent the country in Tokyo last year before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. However, with the short turnaround between NBA seasons, not everybody is thinking about going to Japan this year, including LeBron James. But, The King announced that he will focus on the Toon Squad this summer instead of going to Tokyo.
Stephen Curry is another superstar that could miss the big event, but he offered some words of hope to the fans. The 3x NBA champion isn’t sure about his participation in the tournament but didn’t dismiss the possibility to travel to Asia with the team.
Via Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle:
A gold medal is one thing missing from his resume, but he said he has yet to make up his mind. He continues to look at the logistics of playing in Tokyo. He is curious to learn which other players are planning to go and to see how strong the team will be. “I’m literally 50-50,” he said of his decision. “I probably need to decide in the next two weeks.”
Besides LeBron James and Curry, other stars like Damian Lillard had shown their desire to join the team in the upcoming tournament. It remains to be seen if USA Basketball can assemble a talented team to persuade Steph to join them in the Asian country.
He was part of the team that won the gold medal in 2016. Having the 2x NBA MVP will definitely give them a boost now that Team USA wants to recover their position in international basketball.
