Speaking on his podcast, Warriors legend Draymond Green reacted candidly to the Jimmy Butler trade saga in Miami. After alluding to the long history of tension between the two sides, Green suggested that Butler wanted to live the heat lifestyle without putting in the work that comes with it.

“I’ve been hearing the last couple of years they have been tired of Jimmy, Jimmy was kind of tired of them,” said Green. “I think he enjoyed his life and what comes with him being the face of the Miami Heat. Again, Jimmy is a very serious guy and takes his craft seriously, I don’t want this to come off the wrong way. I just think, he had a good thing there where he’s going to the NBA Finals, where he’s ‘the man’ in Miami. And I think all of those things made what he was going through bearable. And I think it’s just reached a point now where it’s like what do I have left?”

4x NBA champion Draymond Green was drafted by the Warriors back in 2012 and he’s been with them ever since. As a 4x All-Star and former Defensive Player of the Year, Green has only ever been with one team and it’s one of the defining factors of his career. His NBA tenure is a direct contrast to Jimmy Butler’s career, who has tried his luck with multiple teams.

And while the Heat were supposed to be the final destination for Butler, his time with the franchise has come to an end amid a dramatic falling out. As Draymond pointed out in his statement, there have been rumblings of displeasure from both sides for years now and it seems that the two sides were never quite on the same page.

In Draymond’s view, Butler was more dedicated to the Miami lifestyle than leading the Heat on the court. His desire for a life of luxury and pleasure led him to commit his future to Pat Riley. Still, the relationship was never sustainable since Butler couldn’t live up to the pressure of leading one of the most notorious and accomplished teams in the NBA.

During his tenure, Butler has experienced various highs and lows for the Heat, including leading them to the NBA Finals twice over four years. But after failing to win the title, and seeing a sharp decline in recent years, the Heat lost faith in Butler’s ability to lead and the entire team dynamic came crashing down.

For Butler to truly succeed, he needs to find a place to balance the lifestyle he wants while also meeting the requirements of his role. For a team like the Heat, with their rich history and competitive culture of winning, the standard was seemingly too high for Jimmy and he was never able to deliver on a complete championship run.

For Butler’s sake, he better hope that wherever he lands next has the pieces he needs to compete. At 35 years old, the clock is ticking on his NBA career and if he can’t get it done on his fifth team, his championship window may slam shut forever.
