In a segment on ‘Inside the NBA’ this Tuesday, former NBA superstar Charles Barkley flamed JJ Redick in an unhinged rant on national television. The comments came after Redick blasted the media for not properly celebrating the game and creating a toxic environment for the fans.

“JJ you better calm down because when you come for the King you better not miss. He said something about ‘we’re the reason people ain’t watching this crappy product we got.’ Cause I can get you, brother. Remember, I watch these Lakers games and you can’t hide the flaws they have. You’re just a dead man walking. They got rid of Frank Vogel who did a good job, they got rid of Darvin Ham who did a good job but you came out there thinking you were gonna change things with that same ugly girl you went on a date with.”

Redick didn’t call anyone out by name, nor did he reference any specific NBA show. But as arguably the most prominent halftime and postgame studio show, it’s highly likely that JJ had ‘Inside the NBA’ in mind when he made his latest comments scathing the media coverage and blasting prominent voices in the industry for trashing the NBA product.

Arguably the most unpredictable of the TNT crew is Charles Barkley, who often goes viral for his outlandish moments and comments from behind the desk. Over the years, he’s made a habit out of criticizing the modern game and blasting anyone who doesn’t fit his ideals for a model star and leader on the court.

In this case, he went unhinged on the Lakers head coach, who is still in his first season on the job. While Redick and Barkley seemingly have no personal history, his public comments were more than enough to incite an angry reaction from the former NBA superstar.

Not only did he seemingly threaten Redick, but he also called him a “dead man walking,” referring to the notoriously poor job security as Lakers head coach. Many of his predecessors were replaced after only a few years on the job, including Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham, who each made deep playoff runs.

So even after signing a 4-year, $32 million contract with the Lakers this summer, not everyone is convinced that he’ll be around long-term. After seeing how it played out for the Lakers over the past few years, Barkley is sure that Redick will be the next one in line to join the neverending cycle of Lakers coaches.

The good news for Redick is that he’s got the Lakers (19-14) in a good spot right now, despite Barkley’s poor review. At 6th in the West, they are in a position to avoid the play-in and secure a guaranteed spot in the first round of the playoffs.

After tonight’s game, Redick and the Lakers will play the Atlanta Hawka at 10:30 PM EST at Crypto.com arena. They will then head to Toyota Center for a game against the Houston Rockets at 7:00 PM EST. Finally, on January 7th, the Lakers will face off against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center at 7:30 PM EST.
