Luka Doncic Says Dirk Nowitzki Would Beat Him 1-On-1

Luka Doncic has paid the ultimate respect to Dirk Nowitzki on an Instagram post. The young guard is trying to create his own legacy with the Mavs, but also trying to follow Dirk’s footsteps and become a pretty big deal for the team.

It’s pretty clear what he needs to do to reach or surpass Nowitzki’s level of success in Dallas but he’s not afraid of the challenge. However, Luka still believes he’s far from the German’s level and claimed that the 2011 NBA champion would beat him if both players were in their primes.

FIBA shared a picture on Instagram asking fans who would win in a 1-on-1 duel between the German and the Slovenian and the latter quickly ended the discussion, saying his former teammate would win the hypothetical match.

Indeed, we haven’t seen Doncic’s prime yet and that’s scary. But, seeing how great Dirk was, how incredibly he played even after past his prime, you could think Luka isn’t wrong with his guess. However, once he reached his peak, the conversation will probably go for a different route.

Right now the point guard is leading the Mavs’ comeback in the Western Conference, winning seven of their last 10 matches, including a big win over the Los Angeles Clippers, 105-89, on Wednesday night. Doncic is writing his own history in the league and fans hope he will bring them more joy than Dirk did and make him the biggest idol in team history.
