Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic‘s house was recently robbed, as the Slovenian guard joins a string of other athletes who have also been targeted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about other multi-millionaire athletes being targeted by major organized crime groups for high-profile robberies.
“The FBI is warning sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes following a string of burglaries at the homes of prominent NFL and NBA players. The athletes’ homes are targeted due to the perception they may contain high-end goods like designer handbags, jewelry, watches and cash.”
“The NFL and NBA already have issued security alerts to their players after the break-ins, some of which have come when players were away with their teams for road games. The NFL’s alert says homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become ‘increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.’”
South American organized crime groups are suspected of orchestrating the robberies, and the FBI recommends that athletes avoid revealing too much information about where they live, the interiors of their houses, and the valuables they possess, including when they are on vacation.
Athletes are among the richest celebrities in the USA with their incredible multi-million contracts setting them up for generational wealth that few can even imagine. They might be sportsmen but rub shoulders with the elite and live among luxury, which has made them a target for such high-profile robberies.
Doncic isn’t the first NBA player to be robbed this season, with Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks and Mike Conley of the Minnesota Timberwolves also being targeted. They aren’t alone, as NFL superstars such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce of the reigning two-time Super Bowl winners Kansas City Chiefs have also been victims, alongside Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.
An NFL rookie was even shot during an attempted robbery this year, so exercising extra caution would be prudent for any athlete in America’s top sports leagues.
No local would make their city sports team stars feel uncomfortable, lest they leave citing the unsafe nature of their home city. But it seems like local residents aren’t the ones committing these crimes, as powerful organized crime syndicates that span countries might be the ones behind this.
Thankfully, none of the players or their families have been directly harmed, with almost all instances taking place when nobody was at home. It might be time for all these players to beef up their dwellings with increased security to keep themselves protected, as they will always be targets given the wealth and luxury they live in.
