Draymond Green has never been one to mince words and he went off on his Golden State Warriors teammate Buddy Hield during Saturday’s game against the Phoenix Suns at Chase Center. In the third quarter, microphones caught Green ruthlessly cussing out Hield.

“Wake the f*** up,” Green said. “Or sit the f*** down. S***.”

As for what led to Green reacting in that manner, a somewhat careless pass from Hield had forced him to take a contested stepback three, which he airballed. The former DPOY wanted the guard, who had just checked back in the game, to wake up or go back to the bench.

In all, it was just a rough night for Hield. The 32-year-old failed to score even a point against the Suns as he went 0-7 from the field in 15 minutes. He didn’t really affect the game in other ways either, finishing with just one assist and one steal.

While Hield didn’t make any sort of positive impact against the Suns, Green sure did. The 34-year-old had 16 points (6-9 FG), eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block. He played his part in the Warriors shutting down the Suns’ offense in the fourth quarter to come away with a 109-105 win.

After the game, Green was asked about his cussing out Hield in his press conference and explained his reasons for it.

“As a leader, you have to try different methods,” Green said. “Sometimes you go to a guy, sometimes you don’t. I’ve played with Buddy now for 30 games. Trying to learn what makes him tick.”

Green stated he treats his teammates differently based on their personalities. He would never go after Jonathan Kuminga in that manner because he knows that won’t do any good. With Hield, Green is still trying to figure things out.

“To go at Buddy the way I did, we needed that in that moment,” Green added. “We’re flat, we just turned the ball over. Lock in. And that’s not a shot at Buddy… Mics catch everything today but I don’t care. I’ll say it right into the mic. I don’t give a damn. It was needed and we need Buddy Hield to play great. We need Buddy Hield to make shots and we have all the confidence in the world that Buddy will make shots.”

“I know what it looks like to win,” Green stated. “I know what it takes to win. So, as a leader, it’s on you to figure out what it takes to help this team win. And if that’s mixing it up with a guy every now and then, if that’s yelling, then you do that. But don’t be the guy that can’t be yelled at and I’ll never be that guy.”

Not everyone is a fan of Green’s methods but he has a simple response to them, his four rings.

As for this game against the Suns, winning it meant the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 16-15 on the season. They do not look like a serious title contender but will face one next, as they take on the 27-4 Cleveland Cavaliers at Chase Center on Monday at 10 PM ET.
