NBA News: Anthony Davis Won’t Sign A Contract With The Lakers Right Away

Even though Anthony Davis is almost a lock to resign with the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems like the purple and gold will have to wait a while before he’s ready to ink his signature on the paper, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Apparently, Davis won’t sign a deal right away with the team as he takes his time to consider the length and conditions of the agreement, as per Woj’s report:

“Rich Paul, Klutch Sports CEO and Davis’ agent, will be in contact with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka after 6 p.m. ET Friday, sources said, but Davis plans to wait at least through Thanksgiving as he considers his options on the length and structure of maximum contract deals,” Woj said.

According to the report, Davis could consider signing a three-year deal with the Lakers worth $106 million to align his deal with LeBron James’ or take different paths:

“Davis, 27, has several possible scenarios on a new deal with the Lakers, including a three-year, $106 million contract that would include a player option for the 2022-23 season — a structure that would align Davis with the end of LeBron James’ deal. Davis could do a two-year, $68 million deal with an option after next year — or longer deals for four years ($146.7 million) and five years ($189 million),” Woj concluded.

It seems like there’s a new trend around the league of signing short-term deals with teams while they have a window of opportunity to win an NBA Championship, rather than committing for 5 or 6 years as they did in the past.

It’s highly unlikely that Davis backs away from his deal with the Lakers after winning an NBA Championship with them in their first season with the team, especially given his relationship with LeBron James, so even if it takes him a while, Lakers fans have nothing to worry about. The Brow will be back.
