The NBA is filled with great point guards. Some are still in their primes such as Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry, while other players such as Chris Paul are slowly approaching their final years in the league. Either way, all the top point guards in the NBA possess exceptional skills that help them achieve both personal and team success.

But what if we wanted to build the ultimate point guard? By using the key attributes of all the best point guards in the game today, we will be building the most unstoppable basketball player at the point guard position. Without further ado, here are the 10 major attributes of the greatest point guard of all time.

Basketball IQ – Chris Paul

(via Essentially Sports)

Chris Paul has the highest I.Q out of any point guard in the NBA right now. CP3 is also the best leader, holding down the fort in the backcourt on defense and also controlling the pace on offense. Players like Chris Paul do not come around often, and he is truly one of the greatest floor generals of all time.

Paul rarely takes a bad shot, is always in position on defense, and makes the right plays. To start off, the perfect point guard must have Paul’s basketball brain.

Handles – Kyrie Irving

(via Bleacher Report)

Kyrie Irving has the best handles of any player in history. He dances with the ball and it just seems to stick to him everywhere he goes. Irving is a master at creating his own shots and his handles are a big part of that.

Some players come close, including Stephen Curry and Chris Paul specifically, but Kyrie does things with the ball that we have not seen before.

The perfect point guard will have Kyrie’s dribbling ability to create his own shots and leave defenders in the dust.

Shooting – Stephen Curry

Is there any doubt? The perfect point guard will have Stephen Curry’s shooting from beyond the arc. Curry shoots a career 43.5% from three, 47.6% from the field, and 90.6% from the free-throw line. He can make any shot from anywhere and must be defended as soon as he steps a toe past half court.

A point guard with Paul’s brain, Kyrie’s handles, and Curry’s shooting is already unstoppable. But we are done just yet…

Hustle – Russel Westbrook

Some things are important which do not show up on the stat sheet. One of them is hustle, something that is completely evident by Russell Westbrook’s play. Russ goes 110% every night, fighting for every ball and playing at break-neck speed.

A player can have all the skills in the world, but if he does not have a heart and the willingness to leave it on the floor, he will never win. The perfect point guard will have Westbrook’s hustle.

Speed – Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook

In terms of raw speed, the perfect point guard will have Russell Westbrook’s ability to get anywhere on the floor with just a few dribbles. Westbrook is a beast on the fast break and he is a blur as soon as he has the ball. The perfect point guard must be able to get from one end of the floor to the other in just a few seconds, including exploding to the rim with pace.

No other point guard possesses the speed of Russell Westbrook, because he uses it to his advantage on every play. Russ can literally get a shot at the rim anytime because of his pace, so the perfect PG will have this attribute.

Mentality – Russell Westbrook

This is a close one because many great point guards right now have a strong mentality. But Westbrook’s killer mentality is one that is sorely needed.

Russ does not care who is defending him, and what the repercussions are because he feels he is the best player in the league. Even though he isn’t the best player in the league, a superstar player must possess the mentality that he is and Westbrook does.

The perfect point guard will not only have skills and athleticism on his side, but he will have an aggressive and confident mentality to dominate the game without fear.

Clutch – Damian Lillard

 (via CBS Sports)

Continuing with mental attributes, the best point guard in the NBA will have the clutch factor of Damian Lillard. Out of all the best point guards in the league, no player has more of a killer instinct than Dame.

He is a stone cold killer with ice in his veins, something that we have seen first-hand especially in the playoffs. Damian Lillard is the player who ended multiple franchises with his shot-making, including the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder.

The perfect PG will always take and usually make the critical shots, getting everyone out of his way and being the player with the burden on his shoulders.

Defense – Chris Paul

Chris Paul

The perfect point guard will have the defensive capabilities and leadership of Chris Paul. CP3 holds every player accountable on defense, using skills and awareness to defend the ball better than any point guard in the league.

Paul made 9 All-NBA Defensive Teams and averages a career 2.2 SPG. The perfect point guard will not only be a dominant offensive player but will be able to shut down opposing point guards as well.

Chris Paul, although slightly undersized, is the best at reading defensive plays to come up with steals or contest shots. Paul’s defensive awareness will automatically make any point guard a beast on defense.

Passing – Chris Paul

Chris Paul

In terms of pure passing ability, Chris Paul is #1. He does not hog the ball and look for assists, rather he reads the floor and provides shots in rhythm for his teammates. Paul is also a very varied and capable passer and can make pinpoint passes all over the floor.

On the break, he knows when to run with the ball or pass it. In the half-court, he can slow it down and direct traffic. There isn’t a better floor general than Chris Paul.

The perfect point guard will most likely attract double teams all night long, so passing ability will be key for him. Acquiring Paul’s passing will make him the most unstoppable NBA player at the point guard position right now.

Athleticism – Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook

Finally, the perfect point guard will have Westbrook’s athleticism. He will not only have lightning speed but also incredible strength and leaping ability at his position. Which point guard has the most strength and vertical? That would be Russell Westbrook.

A player built like Russ already has an advantage over his opponents, because he will be stronger and faster. Adding skills and attributes of other exceptional point guards will make the perfect point guard the best player in the league.
