In 4th Grade, A Teacher Told Zach LaVine That It’s More Realistic To Become Policeman Or Fireman Than An NBA Player

When a fourth-grader tells you he wants to play in the NBA, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who truly believes him. Out of over 300 million people, only about 450 people are on an NBA roster — that’s an extremely small percentage of the population.

But, in the case of Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, he was able to join the ranks of the best basketball players in the world — much to the surprise of a teacher at his former school.

“I always told him to chase his dreams,” Paul said. “That’s what he did. I remember one time they had one of those career days in school and a teacher in fourth grade asked what he wanted to be. He said he wanted to be an NBA star. The teacher told him to write down something more realistic. He came home and said, ‘The teacher wants me to be a policeman or fireman.’ Me and my wife went to school and said that was my son’s dream, so don’t mess it up; that’s what he wants to be.”

Obviously, not everyone who wants to be an NBA star gets to see those dreams realized. But for LaVine, natural talent, hard work, and having loving parents who believed in him created a recipe that allowed him to succeed at the highest level in sports.

This past season was his best performance yet. He averaged 25.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists on 45% shooting.

It seems LaVine has been overcoming all the odds in his young, but promising, NBA career.
