NBA Rumors: Warriors Could Pursue Marc Gasol In Free Agency

2 Min Read

After 11 seasons in Memphis, Marc Gasol established himself as one of the best big men in the NBA. During his time with the Grizzlies, he made 3 All-Star teams, 2 All-NBA teams, and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013.

By the time he was traded to Toronto, Gasol was 34-years-old and it couldn’t be clearer that his best days were behind him. Still, as a solid two-way force in the paint and a proven veteran player, he could prove useful o a number of teams out there — including the Golden State Warriors, who are reportedly considering a pursuit in free agency.

Marc Gasol is a when-in-Rome target for the Golden State Warriors. They’re better off investing in their wing rotation, but if they can get him for the mini mid-level exception, why not? Their center rotation has room.

Golden State isn’t apt to play Draymond Green at center full-time, Kevon Looney has dealt with a bunch of serious injuries this year, and it isn’t yet known how much Marquese Chriss does for a could-be contender. Gasol would add sweet post- and face-up passing, floor spacing the Warriors don’t have at the 5 spot anymore and a big body to rumble and tumble with fellow big bodies on defense.

Since the departure of Willie Caulie-Stein, the Warriors have been lacking in the frontcourt. Though the combined powers of Steph, Klay, and Draymond will likely be enough to contend, how far can they go without a man in the middle to back them up and go against guys like Anthony Davis, Nikola Jokic, and Rudy Gobert?

Gasol certainly isn’t the best name available, but he’s a Champion, has got a humble mind, and may come at a relatively cheap cost. If you’re the Warriors, there’s every reason to be interested.
