Anthony Davis has had an MVP-caliber start to the 2024-25 NBA season, emerging as the clear-cut No. 1 option for the Los Angeles Lakers and opening the season with monster stat lines. Unfortunately, the Lakers big man appeared to pick up an injury during the team’s 103-115 loss to the Detroit Pistons tonight. Davis spoke to the media in the locker room after the game and gave an update on his injury status.

“I don’t know. I’ll talk to the trainers and just kinda figure out what exactly is going on. I’ve been managing that since the summer honestly… I kinda landed directly on the spot that’s been killing me, so we’ll figure it out. “

The play where Davis picked up the injury came in the fourth quarter as the center drove to the rim for a finish but landed awkwardly on his left ankle after being fouled at the rim.

Davis stayed on the court to try and help the Lakers win, putting up an imposing stat line of 37 points and nine rebounds. The team’s rotation failed to give him the support he needed, with LeBron James doing his best and getting 20 points, eight rebounds, and 11 assists. Austin Reaves had a solid showing with 17 points as well, but others struggled to be impactful in this loss.

The Lakers center is averaging 31.8 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 2.0 blocks this season, building a case to be in both the MVP and DPOY races. He’ll need to stay on the court to achieve these honors, something he doesn’t want fans to worry about.

When LeBron James was asked about Davis missing time in his postgame interview, the former University of Kentucky big man made it clear that he would remain available.

LeBron James: “I don’t know, I’m going second-by-second… I don’t want to play the if game. We’re gonna see how he feels over the next couple of days and go from there.”

Anthony Davis: “He’s not out.”

Davis is shedding the ‘street clothes’ reputation he built up through injury-plagued seasons from 2021 to 2023 before maximizing his on-court contributions over recent seasons.

JJ Redick has given Davis the keys to the franchise while LeBron is supporting the process, so the center will have to power through injuries until he literally can’t play.
