JJ Redick has gotten off to a great start as an NBA head coach and insider Shams Charania gave some insight into what he has brought to the table for the Los Angeles Lakers, during an appearance on SportsCenter.

“Everything has been going swimmingly with JJ Redick as the head coach of the Lakers,” Charania said. “The things that the Lakers felt they were missing the last couple of years, in terms of detail, structure, accountability, and especially accountability for himself. You saw JJ Redick last night after the loss against Phoenix, he took accountability for that loss and he took that loss hard in the locker room.

“I was in Los Angeles last week at that opener that the Lakers had against the Timberwolves at home at Crypto.com Arena,” Charania continued. “And I had a couple of players tell me, JJ Redick, at 10 in the morning on game day, was so psyched and so ready for that game and he was chomping at the bit.

“He wished that the game was at 10 in the morning,” Charania added. “This is someone who lives, eats, and breathes basketball. Everyone on the Lakers can feel it, it’s tangible. And I think those are the qualities, as long as JJ Redick sticks to them, that will help propel this team.”

Charania’s comment about the Lakers feeling they lacked detail, structure, and accountability in the last couple of years is quite a shot at former head coach Darvin Ham. Safe to say, there is no love lost there.

As for Redick, it seems like he was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Lakers. He has led the team to a 3-1 start in 2024-25 and to go with all that Charania mentioned, he has publicly acted in a manner that has sat very well with the players and fans.

Redick took total responsibility for the Lakers’ loss to the Phoenix Suns last time out. The 40-old-year pointed out areas where he came up short, instead of throwing any of his players under the bus after they had blown an 18-point lead in the loss.

The early signs are certainly positive when it comes to Redick, but it is too soon to declare that he is going to be a huge success. This is very much the honeymoon phase and I am interested to see how he copes when the team finds itself in troubled waters. If Redick passes those tests with flying colors, then it’d be fair to say that the Lakers might have hit the jackpot by hiring him.

JJ Redick Was Watching Film At A Car Wash

Redick has called himself a basketball sicko in the past and it was clear that he lives, eats, and breathes the game. We got a great example of that when Baron Davis spotted Redick watching some Sacramento Kings film at a car wash.

Redick was later asked about it and revealed there were a couple of reasons why he did it. First of all, the Lakers were in the midst of a back-to-back, so it was a quick turnaround. His children were also playing two basketball games that day, so he was short on time.

The only way Redick was going to be as well prepared for the Kings as he’d have liked, was by watching film at that car wash. You have to admire the commitment to the cause.
