Gary Vitti, the longtime Los Angeles Lakers trainer who spent over three decades with the franchise, recently revealed his list of the five toughest players to ever wear the purple and gold.
Speaking on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, Vitti offered insight that only someone who was behind the scenes for so many seasons could provide, blending stories of physical grit, mental fortitude, and sheer willingness to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league.
“You’re in that category. But you’ve got to put Kobe number one, and the reason he edges you out is because beyond the hamstring issue. You had a couple of things, but Kobe was pretty beat up by the time he retired. He played through a lot of things you didn’t have to.”
“I’d put you in that category, and then there are different degrees of toughness depending on what we’re talking about. Are we talking about playing hurt? Are we talking about, ‘I’ll beat your a**’?”
“You are, and so is Kobe. Kobe would fight you. He didn’t care how big you were. He squared off with Shaq, which was probably not a good idea, but he didn’t back down.”
“Kareem’s the same way. He didn’t have a lot of injuries, but he wasn’t a man you wanted to anger. And he was calculating, too.”
“I can’t tell you how many players, including Mitch Kupchak, ran down the court holding their throat, because while that skyhook was up here, that elbow was going right into your throat. Kareem’s in there, that’s three.”
“Luke was only with us a year, but you probably have to put him in by reputation alone. I mean, he punched out Darryl Dockett. He wasn’t afraid of anybody, his nickname was The Enforcer… And I’ll tell you what, Shaq was mean. He was big, jolly, and funny, but he was tough. He wasn’t afraid of anybody.”
At the top of Vitti’s list is Kobe Bryant, and for him, it’s not even a debate. Vitti credited Bryant’s relentless drive to play through pain, noting that by the time Kobe retired, his body had endured more punishment than most could imagine. Sprains, fractures, tears, Kobe battled through them all without complaint.
Right behind Kobe on the toughness scale is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, though for entirely different reasons. While Kareem wasn’t plagued with constant injuries, Vitti described him as a player you never wanted to anger.
Kareem’s toughness was calculated, a quiet, precise edge. His infamous skyhook wasn’t just an offensive weapon; his elbows, expertly positioned during the motion, often found their way into the throats of defenders.
The third player Vitti named was Maurice Lucas, better known around the league as “The Enforcer.” Lucas only spent one season with the Lakers, but his reputation preceded him. Known for his toughness, Lucas wasn’t afraid of anybody, no matter their size or status.
Of course, no list of toughest Lakers would be complete without Shaquille O’Neal. While many remember Shaq as a fun-loving, larger-than-life personality, Vitti emphasized that behind the smile was a player with a mean streak. At over 300 pounds, Shaq had the size to dominate physically, but he also had the mindset to enforce his presence on the court.
Finally, Vitti included Byron Scott himself in the discussion, not just because Scott was hosting the podcast, but because he earned it. Scott may not have been the most physically imposing Laker, but he had the grit to play through injuries and a competitive edge that made him a fighter.
His mental toughness was on par with the best, and he never backed down from a challenge.
