Shannon Sharpe is a multi-millionaire today, but he reckons he would have had billions in his pockets. On the latest episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, Sharpe revealed he wanted to buy Google stocks worth $300,000 in the early 2000s, but his advisor told him not to go for it.
Shannon Sharpe: “Remember when Google came out and they thought the shares were gonna open up at about $85 per share? And I remember saying to my financial guys… I had just signed with the Ravens, so I had some money and I was like, ‘Man, I would like to buy $300,000 worth.’ Well, it opens up at $115 and he says it’s overpriced and so it’s gonna come back down.”
Mark Cuban: “You’re not the first one to say that. It’s like Nvidia right now, right? I told my son, my son wanted to invest in it, he bought some and I’m like, ‘I’d rather see it come down first.’ And my son’s like, ‘Who’s the expert now?'”
Shannon Sharpe: “Think about it. How many times has Google split?
Mark Cuban: “I mean it’s worth over $3 trillion now. $3 trillion. Trillions, trillions. Not billions. That’s a thousand billions a trillion dollars.”
Shannon Shape: “Yes, so my investment, I would’ve been a billionaire with you.”
Considering Google went public in 2004 and Sharpe joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2000, he might have gotten the years wrong there. Regardless, he claimed he had thought of getting some Netflix stocks too before they boomed but was talked out of that as well by his advisor.
While Sharpe is a bit upset about that, he also acknowledged that he had been talked out of getting stocks that tanked later on, so things do even out. If the 56-year-old had got those stocks before the boom, though, he certainly would have made a whole lot of money.
Sharpe, who made $22.3 million in his NFL career, now has a net worth of $14 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, so he isn’t certainly short on money, but he could have had so much more.
Magic Johnson Turned Down The Chance To Get Nike Stocks That Are Worth Over $5 Billion Today
While Sharpe can blame his advisor for him not getting those Google stocks, Magic Johnson has no one else to blame for not getting Nike stocks back in the day. Johnson explained why he turned down stocks from Nike that are worth over $5 billion today.
“Here I am, just won the national championship against Larry Bird and three companies came in: Converse, Adidas, and Nike. Nike was a year or two old, and so, Converse offered me the most money and you take the money. Phil Knight came and said, ‘Hey, I can’t offer you the same type of money, but I could offer you stock. [Magic puts his hands in his face] I didn’t know anything about it, and my family didn’t come from money, and I didn’t even know what stocks was at that time. So I passed on the stocks… Can you imagine? 45 years, $5 billion that would have been worth today.”
Johnson became a billionaire last year but could have become one so much earlier if he had just agreed to that Nike deal. Considering where he came from, though, you can’t be too hard on him for turning it down. Also, no one could have foreseen at the time that Nike would become the giant that it is today.
