Jaylen Brown has officially ended his sneaker free agency, not by signing with a major brand, but by launching his own. Brown has started his own performance brand, 741, and their very first sneaker, 741 Performance Rover “Black Moon,” is already available for pre-order.

According to the company’s press release, via NBC Sports Boston, Brown turned down endorsement deals worth more than $50 million from other major sneaker brands to pursue full ownership and creative control of his own brand.

“The understanding of ownership and value is what’s important for the next generation of athletes,” Brown said. “It’s time to think different and be different… create new ideas. It’s time to create more value for everyone involved, from athletes to consumers to employees and the communities that support them.”

Brown was also influenced to start his own brand by the late great Kobe Bryant. It had been reported that Bryant had plans to start his own sneaker line before his passing and the 27-year-old was inspired by the vision he had.

“Kobe’s journey taught me about being fearless and pushing sports, along with society, to new heights. That’s the mindset I’m bringing to 741,” Brown added.

As for what led Brown to choose the name 741, the company’s official website explains the reasoning behind it.

“In Numerology, the number 7 represents spiritual awakening, wisdom, and understanding, while 4 symbolizes hard work, stability, and practicality. The number 1 stands for new beginnings, creativity, and independence.”

“Together, these numbers tell a story of intuition, resilience, and boldness, embodying the spirit behind Jaylen’s decision to forge his own path and create 741—a brand that champions authenticity and empowerment for all.”

The brand also has one clear mission, empowering athletes and providing consumers with quality, stylish designs that elevate performance on and off the field. The products will go live for sale on Oct. 22, the day the Boston Celtics commence their title defense against the New York Knicks.

Jaylen Brown Has Had Quite The Eventful Year

The year 2024 is one that Brown will never forget, for good and bad reasons. On the positive front, the three-time All-Star helped the Celtics win their first title since 2008 and was named NBA Finals MVP in the process. Off the court, meanwhile, Brown appears to have started dating Kysre Gondrezick, so he is winning in life as well.

As for the negatives, well, Brown was left out of Team USA’s roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics and was quite unhappy about it. Brown appeared to believe that Nike played a part in that, so you knew he was not going to be signing with them this offseason. I thought he’d sign with one of their major rivals, but chose to go solo instead.

Brown, who averaged 23.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game in 2023-24, will now be hoping to put on a show in his new sneakers in 2024-25 and help the Celtics pull off a successful title defense. No team has won back-to-back championships since the Golden State Warriors did it in 2017-18, but the Celtics you feel do stand a good chance at accomplishing that feat.
