Lou Williams shared the story of Oscar Robertson once talking about his generation not getting the credit they deserve. He went on about how players from the current generation would have struggled against the likes of Wilt Chamberlain. It was the comment about Chris Paul and Bob Cousy that garnered the most controversy.

“This is like the end of a season, the team brings in a motivational speaker or somebody. So, Oscar Robertson was the speaker. The speech was going well, we was engaged, and we was in tune. And then he flipped the switch on us, bro.”

“He goddamn started hating us out of the blue. The only thing I remember, he said something about Shaq like ‘Shaq couldn’t hold Wilt Chamberlain’s bag’. That’s the first time you heard the room rumble.”

“We tried to keep it respectful though because it’s a f**king legend like Oscar Robertson up there talking to us. But we see now he is not on our side no more. We started looking at each other like ‘What the f**k just happened? He doesn’t like us at all’. Then he said ‘Chris Paul couldn’t be in the same gym as Bob Cousy’. We lost it!”

It is unknown when Williams’ story is from, but regardless of the timeframe, there is no denying that Robertson’s comments are controversial, to say the least. Bob Cousy’s name comes up a lot when comparing modern stars, but to say that Paul wasn’t even good enough to compete with Cousy is quite ridiculous.

Paul is considered by many to be one of the greatest point guards of all time, and the last traditional point guard in the modern NBA. To suggest that a perennial All-Star and incredible superstar could not compete with a similar player from the past is quite disrespectful.

Old Generation Can Be Disrespectful To New Generation

These comments from Lou Williams about what Oscar Robertson allegedly said about Chris Paul and Shaquille O’Neal just goes to show that the gap between generations, and the disrespect shown between the two goes both ways.

Recently, Anthony Edwards caused a lot of controversy after claiming that players in Michael Jordan’s era were not skilled, at least compared to the players today. These comments rubbed a lot of veteran players and former NBA stars of a previous generation the wrong way.

Magic Johnson was especially harsh on Edwards, claiming that he hasn’t won anything basketball to make the comments that they did.

A lot of the former players counseled Edwards and the current generation of players to show more respect to the people who paved the way for them. However, considering how disrespectful and dismissive the previous generation is of the modern players, they might feel justified in taking those shots at them.

Whether it be stars of the previous era comparing themselves to the modern era, or claiming that the younger players are soft and couldn’t play in their tougher, more physical era, these comments have always gone both ways, and no one can expect them to stop anytime soon.
