Kevin Garnett recently shared his thoughts on Luka Doncic’s potential to surpass LeBron James’ all-time scoring record during an episode of “The Truth & Ticket” podcast. Garnett, known for his candid and often colorful commentary, didn’t hold back his admiration for Doncic’s scoring prowess.

“Listen, Luka is set up to be the only n***a to catch Bron. Nobody wanna say that shit. Listen, Luka is averaging 30, what do you average this year, 33? On one leg, drinking beer, having fun, doing God knows what else.”

Mike Finley could’ve never snatched @paulpierce34’s beer. 🤣

Garnett’s point underscores the impressive start to Doncic’s career. Despite his casual and seemingly carefree demeanor off the court, Doncic has consistently put up remarkable numbers. He averaged 33.9 points per game this season, showcasing his scoring ability and resilience.

LeBron James, who currently holds the all-time scoring record with 40,474 points, continues to add to his total, potentially extending his lead for another two to three years. This longevity adds to the challenge for anyone aspiring to break his record.

As of now, Doncic has amassed 11,470 points in his career. The gap between Doncic and LeBron stands at a daunting 29,004 points. Garnett’s confidence in Doncic’s potential, however, is rooted in the young star’s exceptional scoring ability and the assumption that he will maintain this pace over a lengthy career.

While the road to surpassing LeBron’s record is long and uncertain, Garnett’s endorsement highlights Doncic’s unique position in the NBA. If Doncic continues to score at his current rate, stays healthy, and enjoys a long career, he could indeed become a contender for the all-time scoring crown.

Garnett’s comments remind us that in the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA, records are made to be broken, and young stars like Doncic are always poised to challenge the status quo.

How Can Luka Doncic Catch LeBron James?

Catching LeBron James‘ all-time scoring record is a daunting challenge for any player, including Luka Doncic. The current gap between LeBron’s total points and Luka’s is a staggering 29,004 points. Given Doncic’s best scoring year where he averaged 33.9 points per game, let’s consider a scenario where he averages 34 points per game.

To bridge this 29,004-point gap, Doncic would need to maintain his 34-points-per-game average for 10 straight seasons without missing a single game. This feat would require Doncic to play every game in each of those seasons, totaling 820 games. Even then, he would still need about another half-season to surpass LeBron’s current record, assuming LeBron retired today, which is unlikely.

One significant challenge is Doncic’s durability. He has never played more than 72 games in a season, raising doubts about his ability to maintain such an intense scoring pace over a decade without missing any games due to injuries or rest.

In the playoffs, the challenge is similarly immense. LeBron has scored 8,162 points in playoff games, while Doncic currently stands at 1,462 points. This creates a gap of 6,700 points. Doncic boasts the second-highest playoff scoring average ever at 31.1 points per game. To surpass LeBron’s playoff record, Doncic would need to play approximately 215 more playoff games at his current scoring rate.

Achieving this would effectively require nearly 10 NBA Finals runs, assuming deep playoff appearances each year. Such consistency and longevity are rare, even for the most elite players.

While Doncic possesses incredible talent and scoring ability, catching LeBron’s records will demand unprecedented consistency, health, and numerous deep playoff runs. The task is Herculean, but if anyone has the potential to make a run at these records, it’s a player of Doncic’s caliber.

The journey to catching LeBron’s records will be closely watched and will require a near-perfect blend of skill, health, and team success over the next decade or more.
