Angel Reese and other Sky players had to warn fans to not try and meet them at their hotel after an incident that took place. Sky players arrived at their hotel in Washington to play against the Mystics, only to find a fan who was trying to harass them. Isabelle Harrison revealed that one specific teammate was targeted, whereas Michaela Onyenwere noted that the Sky security team handled things immediately.
Angel Reese: “finding out our teams hotel to pull with a camera as we get off the bus and put it in my teammates face & HARASS her is NASTY WORK. this really is outta control and needs to STOP.”
Isabelle Harrison: “WOW!!! Thank GOD for security. My teammate being harassed at our hotel is insane! Couldn’t even step off the bus!!!”
Michaela Onyenwere: “Getting harassed at our hotel is where the line needs to be drawn. Some “fans” have NO CHILLLLL… We have security, and they did a great job of de-escalating the situation/protecting us. It’s still extremely weird & crosses the boundaries meeting us right when we get off the bus.”
Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times gave some further details about the incident. She revealed that a male fan, who was not a guest at the hotel, with a camera was waiting for the Sky players.
He then turned on the camera and began to prod and ask questions to Chennedy Carter specifically, which Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca revealed. Pagliocca praised the Sky’s security team and added that the security team escorted the fan away immediately and informed the hotel staff about the situation.
“It was over as fast as it started. I’m very confident in our security always making our players feel safe. Today was a great example of how critical they are to our team.”
While the situation was quite an unfortunate one, luckily, none of the players were harmed. Regardless, this is a terrible look for fans of the WNBA, as this is not the way anyone should be treated, let alone a professional athlete. Fans should show more respect toward these players, and not try to invade their space when near them.
Chennedy Carter’s Hard Foul On Caitlin Clark Has Caused Controversy
Many fans and analysts have linked this incident to the recent controversy surrounding Chennedy Carter. Carter has been in the headlines for the last few days after she delivered a hard blow to Caitlin Clark during the game between the Sky and the Fever. Carter found support from her teammates, especially Angel Reese, who applauded her for downing the former Iowa State standout.
For her part, Clark did not show any frustration with the incident, claiming that she could handle the physicality of the WNBA.
However, the incident caused a storm in sports media. Stephen A. Smith and Monica McNutt had a heated disagreement on First Take over the coverage of the WNBA since Clark’s arrival. Meanwhile, Pat McAfee called Caitlin Clark a ‘white b*tch’ on his show, for which he had to apologize and clarify that he was trying to be complimentary towards her.
Chennedy Carter has somewhat of a history when it comes to aggressive behavior. She once threatened to fight a teammate of hers in 2021. Regardless of her behavior though, that does not give fans the license to harass her and try and interrogate her for what happens on the court.
Fans can voice their displeasure on social media or in the stadiums, but seeking out the hotel and stay information of players to try and confront them crosses the line and invades the privacy of these players. Hopefully, this incident will force teams to take stricter measures and teach fans to not overstep boundaries.
