Pat McAfee was not on his best behavior when talking about Caitlin Clark on his show.

Pat McAfee landed himself in hot water this morning when he used some choice words for Caitlin Clark. While talking on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’, the eponymous host called Caitlin Clark a ‘white b*tch’ when talking about the controversy surrounding the Indiana Fever superstar.

“I feel like the media people that continually say ‘this rookie class, this rookie class’. Nah. Just call it for what it is, there’s one white b*tch for the Indiana team who is a superstar.”

This is crazy. 😳

McAfee was trying to be complimentary with his statement, but he did issue an apology later in the day, stating that he was trying to praise a fellow Indiana sports star.

“I shouldn’t have used “white bitch” as a descriptor of Caitlin Clark. No matter the context.. even if we’re talking about race being a reason for some of the stuff happening. I have way too much respect for her and women to put that into the universe. My intentions when saying it were complimentary just like the entire segment but, a lot of folks are saying that it certainly wasn’t at all. That’s 100% on me and for that I apologize… I have sent an apology to Caitlin as well. Everything else I said… still alllllll facts. #Journalism #WNBAProgrum #SheIsTheOne“

However, despite the apology, McAfee later went on to WWE Monday Night Raw, where he is a commentator, and referenced the comment during the show.

“That is one big, white, son of a b*tch”.

McAfee has one of the most popular sports shows in the world and garners a lot of eyes on his product. So for him to use such disrespectful language to describe an athlete, even if he was trying to be complimentary to her, is out of line. Furthermore, it raises some important questions in sports media – would McAfee have called a white male athlete dominating the league the same term?

Caitlin Clark Has Been The Catalyst For Major Sports Media Controversy

McAfee’s comments are just the first of several sports media personalities who have said some questionable things regarding the Caitlin Clark matter. Earlier in the day, Stephen A. Smith was at the receiving end of a reality check from Monica McNutt, who pointed out that First Take rarely covered the WNBA until recently.

Smith responded to McNutt’s words on his podcast, seemingly taking credit for fame and rise in popularity, while defending First Take as one of the only shows in the world to spotlight women’s sports prominently.

“You ever heard of Monica McNutt? You have now. Because she is on First Take a lot… Now I have sat back for years and taken a lot of sh*t from people. Some don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Some who act like they don’t know just because they want to get at me. I could care less about people getting at me, I just want you to be accurate.”

“And it is highly offensive to me when somebody implies or flat-out states like Monica McNutt did this morning, which was factually incorrect. I challenge anybody to find a show in sports television that discusses women’s issues, that discusses the WNBA or women’s sports, that highlights and profiles female analysts more than First Take.”

The rise in popularity of the WNBA has not only brought about a degree of equality in basketball that was not there before, but it has also forced the sports media to ask each other some difficult questions in the name of progress.
