Caitlin Clark is no stranger to physical play and has faced increased targeting by WNBA players early in her rookie season. Following a particularly rough game against the Chicago Sky, Clark addressed the situation in a post-game press conference.

“It is what it is you know. I feel like I’m just at the point where you accept it and don’t retaliate, like you know just let them hit you be what it is. Don’t let it get inside your head and know it’s coming.”

“I think at this point like I know I’m going to take a couple hard shots a game and that’s what it is it.”

“I’m trying not to let it bother me and you know just stay in the game and saying what’s important because usually it’s the second person that gets caught when if you retaliate or something so just trying to stay in the game and focus on my team and focus on what’s important.” (18:08)

Clark’s composure and maturity shone through as she discussed the physicality she’s been subjected to. This attitude reflects Clark’s resilience and understanding of the game. She recognizes the importance of maintaining her composure and not retaliating, knowing that the second person often gets caught in such situations. Instead, she focuses on staying in the game and contributing to her team’s success.

During the game against the Sky, Clark was subjected to a hard, controversial foul by Chennedy Carter. Late in the third quarter, Carter delivered a shoulder check that sent Clark to the floor. The referees promptly assessed a foul on Carter, highlighting the non-basketball nature of the play.

Clark’s ability to take such physical hits and remain focused on her game is commendable. Despite these challenges, she continues to perform at a high level, demonstrating her toughness and dedication to the sport. Her response to these situations not only shows her mental fortitude but also sets a positive example for her teammates and young athletes watching her journey.

The increased physicality against Clark has become a hot topic in the WNBA. Her confrontations, such as the one with Seattle Storm guard Victoria Vivians earlier in the week, further emphasize the intensity she faces. However, with her unwavering focus and resilience, Clark continues to rise above, showing that she is prepared to handle whatever comes her way on the court.

Fever GM And Coach Slams Caitlin Clark’s Treatment After Latest Cheap Shot

Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides and general manager Lin Dunn have expressed their frustration and anger over the treatment of Caitlin Clark during her early WNBA games. The tipping point came during a recent game against the Chicago Sky when Clark was subjected to a series of hard fouls, including a blatant hip-check by Sky guard Chennedy Carter.

Clark, the 2024 No. 1 draft pick, has been targeted with physical play since entering the league. Despite these challenges, she continues to maintain her composure and focus on the game.

However, Sides and Dunn are not taking the situation lightly. Dunn took to social media to voice her disapproval, stating:

“There’s a difference between tough defense and unnecessary targeting actions! It needs to stop! The league needs to ‘cleanup’ the crap! That’s NOT who this league is!!”

Sides, equally frustrated, told reporters that she plans to send tapes of the incidents to the league office. Clark’s resilience has been commendable, and Sides praised her for handling the situation with grace.

“I’m trying not to get fined. I’m just gonna keep sending these possessions to the league and these plays. Hopefully, they’ll start to take a better look at some of the things we see happening or we think is happening.”

“Just more happy that Caitlin handled it the way she did… It’s tough to keep getting hammered the way she does and to not get rewarded with free throws or a foul call. She’s continuing to fight through that. Appreciate that from her, really proud of her for doing that.” (4:30)

The controversy surrounding Clark’s treatment on the court highlights the need for the WNBA to address and curb overly aggressive and non-basketball plays. As one of the league’s rising stars, Clark’s ability to endure and excel despite these challenges only underscores her determination and skill.

However, the league’s officials must ensure that such physicality does not overshadow the game and that players are protected from unwarranted aggression.
