Jalen Brunson has been simply phenomenal for the New York Knicks in these playoffs, but Draymond Green wants fans to pump the brakes a little bit with regards to the star guard. On the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show, Green was answering some fan questions, with one of them being whether Brunson has become the best point guard in the NBA.
“F*** no, Steph Curry in the NBA,” Green said. “Dude, are you crazy? Next. That’s ridiculous. Steph Curry’s still in the NBA. He’s still great. Come on. Luka Doncic is also a point guard… You kidding me? Golly, what is wrong with these people?”
I do agree with Green here. Brunson has been amazing in these playoffs, with averages of 35.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 8.1 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. The 27-year-old led the Knicks past the Philadelphia 76ers in six games in the first round and now has them up 2-0 against the Indiana Pacers, but he is not better than the likes of Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic just yet.
One incredible postseason run isn’t enough to get Brunson to the top of that list of best point guards. Also, while the Knicks are up 2-0 against the Pacers, the one-time All-Star is yet to even lead a team to the Conference Finals.
When Brunson did make it that far in 2022 with the Dallas Mavericks, he was playing second-fiddle to Doncic. Even if he does take the Knicks to the Conference Finals, I still wouldn’t have him at the top, but if he leads them to the NBA Finals, then we might have to start the conversation on whether he is the best point guard. Until then, he’ll have to settle with just having a spot in the top five.
As for who is the best, I would go with Curry, even though the Golden State Warriors did not make the playoffs this season. The 36-year-old put up impressive averages of 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game in 2023-24 while shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc.
Curry is still playing at a very high level, but if the Warriors disappoint yet again in 2024-25, then I think it would be fair to say that he no longer deserves to have that top spot.
As for who might then take over, I would go with Doncic. The Slovenian just led the league in scoring this season by averaging 33.9 points, to go with 9.2 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. He is only going to get better as well, which is a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Draymond certainly isn’t a very popular figure in New York, thanks to these comments and some others he has made recently. Just last week, Green said a ball-dominant Brunson isn’t going to lead the Knicks to the promised land. The 34-year-old also made it clear he doesn’t hate the Knicks but added that their fans are delusional.
I have to admit that I have serious doubts as well about whether a Brunson-led team can win a championship. I believe he can take his teams deep into the playoffs and potentially even the Finals, but I don’t think he can be the best player on a title-winning team. Time will tell whether I am right or not.
