Isaiah Thomas has finally gotten another opportunity to play in the NBA. Almost two years after he last played a game in the league, Thomas is signing a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns, as per NBA insider Shams Charania.

Thomas averaged 32.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League in four outings to get this opportunity with the Suns. I would say, though, that the chances of the two-time All-Star averaging 20 points per game for the Suns, as that fan stated, are next to none.
Thomas last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, where he averaged 8.4 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game for the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets. The 35-year-old just hasn’t been the same after suffering that hip injury in the playoffs in 2017.
At best, Thomas could provide an offensive spark off the bench for the Suns. He is also another ball-handler and playmaker for a team that does not have an established point guard on the roster. I hope the 5’9″ guard does manage to impress to the point that Phoenix signs him for the rest of the season.
This is Thomas’ second stint with the team, having previously played for the Suns in the 2014-15 season. In 46 games for them, he averaged 15.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. The Suns then traded him to the Boston Celtics, where he would become a star and Thomas even finished fifth in the MVP voting in 2017.
Kevin Garnett’s Biggest Problem With The Suns Is They Don’t Have A Point Guard
Thomas is joining a Suns team that is seventh in the West with a 39-28 record this season. They have not quite lived up to expectations and Kevin Garnett shared his biggest problem with the Suns.
“You know how you’re not in? when your f*cking record says it,” said Garnett. “If y’all ain’t been three-manned up like it was built to be, and then y’all went at the West, then we would have a real asset. But we can’t make that assessment with these guys being in and out… and you still ain’t got a f*cking point guard. That’s a major issue that nobody wants to address. You got three killers out here and they all got to figure out who bringing the ball up…. you got them thinking when they just wanna be out here gunning and reacting.”
Not having that floor general has really hurt the Suns this season, especially in the fourth quarter. They rank dead last in the NBA this season with an offensive rating of 103.2 and a net rating of -14.8 in the fourth quarter. Will Thomas solve those problems? Certainly not.
