Kobe Bryant’s Statue Has Four Misspelled Words In The Box Score

The statue honoring Kobe Bryant outside the Lakers home arena has been spotted with multiple typos the Lakers are scrambling to fix.

The NBA world rejoiced when Kobe Bryant was finally honored by the Los Angeles Lakers and given a statue outside the Crypto.com Arena. The statue unveiling was well-deserved and emotional for fans around the world. Unfortunately, the statue has a series of typos in the box score from Kobe’s 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors.

Former Lakers guard Von Wafer’s name is misspelled as ‘Vom Wafer.’ Former Toronto Raptors guard José Calderon’s name is incorrectly spelled as ‘Jose Calderson.’ If messing up player spellings wasn’t enough, the word ‘decision’ is also spelled incorrectly. This happens twice, both times while writing ‘Coach’s Decision,’ misspelled as ‘decicion.’

This is quite incredible, as something like this definitely would’ve been discovered during the process of the statue being made or at least before the unveiling. Did the Lakers think nobody would notice? Or worse, did the Lakers not notice it themselves? When you want to honor a franchise legend by immortalizing them via statue, you don’t want the statue to be full of silly errors such as typos.

The statue was made by an Illinois-based couple Omri Amrany and Julie Rotblatt-Amrany, who have refused to comment on the typos. Thankfully, the Lakers were forced to act on this and release a statement vowing to fix the typos in the statue.

“We have been aware of this for a few weeks and are already working to get it corrected soon,” a team spokesperson told The Athletic.

Kobe Bryant Will Have Three Statues

This statue was the first of three statues to be unveiled outside the Crypto.com Arena in Kobe’s honor. Another statue should honor his achievements as No. 8 of the Lakers and a third statue will honor his relationship with his daughter, Gianna Bryant, who passed away alongside him in the 2020 helicopter crash.

“Because fans all over the world and the City of Angels loved Kobe so much, he will have three statues in front of the arena, also known as ‘The House That Kobe Built,” Vanessa Bryant said. “One wearing the number eight, one with our beautiful daughter Gianna, and one wearing the number 24.”

Kobe is arguably the greatest Laker of all time, equalling Magic Johnson in titles won with the franchise but outlasting every legend that’s come through this franchise.

He had impressive averages of 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game, and is the franchise’s all-time leader in games, points, and steals. Nobody is even remotely close to catching up to him in these categories, so it’s safe to say Kobe will continue to be regarded as the greatest Laker of all time until someone new gets drafted to the franchise and becomes a generational superstar.
