Former five-star recruit and Memphis Tigers’ player Mikey Williams has beaten multiple felony counts that could have landed him in jail for 28 years by reaching a plea deal, pleading guilty to only one charge, and avoiding prison time. Williams reacted with joy after the case was done, expressing his desire to return to the court.
“It’s all over. I feel good brother. All glory to God, I’m just happy I made it out of this situation. I’m excited to get back onto the court.”

Williams was facing nine felony counts that could have ended his basketball career with a nearly 30-year prison sentence. This was because of a shooting at his home in March 2023. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident and Williams pleaded guilty to a special allegation of using a firearm during the threat.
Due to his guilty plea for one charge, the other eight counts were dismissed. This helped him avoid prison, with Williams’ punishment being relatively mild. He’s been ordered to do 80 hours of community service, attend anger management sessions, and complete a gun safety course.
Williams’ legal team has said that the matter reached the District Attorney’s office as well, with the plea likely being approved by some of the most influential legal voices in the state.
Will Mikey Williams Resume His Basketball Career?
There was once a time when Mikey Williams was considered the best prospect in the 2023 class. With his classmates expected to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft, Williams is miles away from making his NBA dreams come true. After ending high school as a four-star recruit, Williams declared for the Memphis Tigers’, not having participated in any basketball activities with the university due to his legal troubles.
He should be able to return to playing for Memphis if the university allows his return. If they don’t, Williams will likely have to resurrect his career at a mid-major school, similar to what Emoni Bates did last season. Bates had his fair share of on and off-court problems, leaving the Memphis Tigers to play for East Michigan, recovering his draft stock enough to be a second-round pick in the 2023 Draft.
Mikey was interacting with NBA stars on the regular, sharing a competitive rivalry with Bronny James in his early high-school years. He’s since been recognized by All-NBA talents such as Damian Lillard, proving that Williams can ball. it’s a question of whether he can focus on the court enough to reap the full benefits of his incredible talent.
Williams has already made millions through brand and endorsement deals. He can probably still sustain his lifestyle by committing to being an influencer around the sport, but he has way too much talent to give that up this easily. College can be a four-year-long process, and the 19-year-old can rehabilitate his reputation over the next year or two.
