LeBron James is about to hit a major milestone as a father, as his son has been cleared to return to the court after a cardiac arrest derailed his career in the summer. With his basketball career likely resuming soon, James informed the media that he would miss a Lakers game if it coincided with Bronny’s debut for the USC Tigers.
“LeBron James just said that if Bronny makes his USC debut on the same day the Lakers are playing, he’ll miss the Lakers game to attend Bronny’s game. He said he told his teammates on the flight over to OKC. ‘Family over everything,’ James said.”
When LeBron announced tonight that if his son, Bronny’s, college hoops debut falls on the same night as a Lakers game, he’d skip work to attend the USC game a couple of his teammates jokingly protested. There are a few overlapping dates coming up: 12/28; 12/30; 1/3; 1/13; 1/17 pic.twitter.com/YZEHqK6N9E

The NCAA season began a month ago but Bronny has been unable to join players like top-five draft prospect Isaiah Collier on the court due to his cardiac arrest. The Tigers know how to deal with a rostered player recovering from a cardiac arrest, as they proved with Vince Iwuchukwu last season.
Nobody should be upset with LeBron for wanting to witness his son’s debut in the NCAA, especially after the summer they went through. Bronny could have lost his career, or worse, his life when he had his health scare. Thankfully, he has been able to make a speedy recovery and nobody should want to take that away from LeBron and hate on him for missing one game.
Bronny James’ NBA Dream Is Still Alive
With Bronny returning to the court, everyone will pray he manages to impress and stay in the running to be a first-round draft prospect ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft. Bronny will be eligible to finally enter the league, giving LeBron a chance to realize his dream of teaming up with his son in the NBA. LeBron is a free agent next summer, with a player option on his contract with the Lakers.
LeBron could feel like the Lakers are in a strong position to contend next season and stay on with the franchise, given he has shown no signs of slowing down on the court. He could easily join Bronny in the 2025-26 season if he wanted to, but James will be entering year 23 by then, so we’ll have to see how this situation plays out. All of this can be avoided if the Lakers figure out how to draft Bronny in the first place.
Bronny was projected as one of the best guard defenders in this class and has a wide range of possible draft positions right now. There have been scouts that have rated him as a lottery or top-10 talent, though it seems most people have dropped their stock after his cardiac arrest, usually being seen at the end of the first round or in the second round.
He could get drafted by a team with the hope that LeBron leaves the Lakers to team up with them, which isn’t something Bronny would like to hear. Thankfully, he does seem to be an NBA-caliber prospect, so it all depends on what he can achieve once he’s in the league.
The USC Tigers have started the season 4-1 and Bronny’s return should keep them as a top-25 team in the nation. They’re currently ranked 23rd, but if Bronny proves to be the five-star prospect he was touted to be, this team could find themselves as one of the favorites for the NCAA Tournament heading into March Madness.
