LaVar Ball has made plenty of bold claims over the years, but we might have just gotten the boldest one of the lot. LaVar claims he is signing his son LiAngelo to the richest shoe deal ever with Big Baller Brand, and that he’ll earn more than what Michael Jordan does with Nike.
“I’m gonna sign Gelo to the biggest shoe deal ever,” LaVar said on Vlad TV. “… I’m gonna give him 100% of the sales of the shoe. I’m gonna make the shoe, but he gonna make the shoe. They gonna never offer nobody that. 100% of the sales. We’re gonna sell his shoe for 180.”
$180 is a lot cheaper than some of the other top shoes from BBB and LaVar claimed that it was the price LiAngelo wanted. It will be called the “G3” and the 56-year-old then explained how they’d make more than Jordan.
“Let’s say we sell a million shoes worldwide at 180,” LaVar continued. “Give Gelo $180 million, that’s his money, it’s the G3 on there. Jordan only gets 130 from Nike… $130 million a year from Jumpman. The next biggest shoe contract is $32 million for LeBron (James) from Nike. So Gelo, we sell a million shoes in a year, he could clear them and not even in the league yet.”
(starts at 1:40 mark):
While LaVar has these grand ideas, I can’t help but wonder about some of the issues here. If LiAngelo is going to get 100% of the sales, then how is BBB making any money on these shoes? Forget a profit, how do you cover the cost of making a million shoes? It’d bankrupt the company sooner rather than later.
Also, with all due respect to LiAngelo, I don’t see how you see one million of his shoes. Maybe it’d be possible for LaMelo Ball, as he has become a star in the NBA, but LiAngelo hasn’t even played a game in the league.
How Much Did Michael Jordan Earn From Nike Last Year?
LaVar also seems to have made a mistake in terms of his estimate of how much Jordan earns with Nike. He earned $130 million from them in 2019, but that number has gone up a lot since then. Recently, Jordan became the first athlete to join the Forbes 400. He now has a net worth of $3 billion and actually earned $260 million from Nike last year.
Jordan is certainly going to earn even more as the years go by, so LaVar will probably have to sell three million G3s in a year to surpass the Chicago Bulls icon. If one million was unrealistic, I don’t know what to say for three. This is just LaVar being LaVar by putting out some ridiculous statements, and we all know none of this is probably happening.
LaVar Ball Blamed Nike For Lonzo’s Injuries
LaVar has faced a lot of criticism for his antics over the years, but there is one that perhaps stings him the most. There is a notion that it was wearing the BBB shoes that eventually led to the injury nightmare that his oldest son Lonzo is going through.
The 25-year-old even once said that BBB’s ZO2 shoe exploded while he was playing basketball, but LaVar was quick to point out that Lonzo tore his knee while wearing Nike shoes. LaVar then stated that Nike has a greater track record of getting players hurt than BBB. He stated that Lonzo’s Nike shoes weren’t up to standard, and it caused his son’s knee injury.
