New Houston Rockets’ signing Dillon Brooks is already showing exactly how he can contribute to the Rockets this season. By making aggressive plays at inopportune moments and getting himself ejected from a game. That’s what happened in their preseason game against the Indiana Pacers after Brooks attempted a groin shot on center Daniel Theis.

This is early in the first quarter of a preseason game. Many will appreciate this sort of hustle because it’s good to see competitive spirit even if it is preseason. But on the whole, punching someone in the groin during a preseason game is wholly unnecessary. Doing it during a regular season game is unnecessary enough, so this is a divisive matter.
The Rockets ended up winning 103-122, so it’s not like Brooks was dearly missed on the court. Regardless, fans are already breaking out into massive debates about Brooks’ actions.
Fans Can’t Decide If Dillon Brooks Deserved The Ejection
Most fans were relishing in Brooks’ misfortune but many were debating if this was a worthy ejection. One fan claimed no because this is a pattern from Brooks, joking about the former Grizzlies’ tendencies of grabbing at the groin.
This is a regular move for him and this is a preseason game 💀
I think Dillon just enjoys grabbing nuts pic.twitter.com/0lFRNMyx02

Some fans pointed out how funny it was that the first thing Brooks did as a member of the Houston Rockets was get himself ejected for a dirty play.
ngl no but him being ejected 5 min into his first game is hilarious

One fan thinks Brooks should have stayed in because he’s going around a screen, calling it a reputation call.
He’s going around a screen. Tbh this is more of a reputation one and the fact it’s preseason

Another fan wasn’t surprised that Brooks was playing dirty basketball.

One fan thinks a Flagrant One would have sufficed because Brooks didn’t wind up and swing for a punch.
Didn’t really see a wind up into it 🤷🏻♀️ Flagrant 1 would’ve been fair

One fan flat-out called Brooks an extremely dirty player.

More fans thought it was a soft and unnecessary call.

Brooks is going to come into this season with a ginormous chip on his shoulder. His tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies clearly ended acrimoniously, with his instigatory actions backfiring on the team in the first round of the 2023 Playoffs, prompting the Grizz to cut Brooks lose and make him a scapegoat for their failures last season.
He did make an All-Defensive Second Team appearance and will look to work in tandem with Ime Udoka to re-establish a high level of defensive intensity from the young Rockets locker room that has gotten too familiar with playing tanking basketball.
Brooks averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists on 39.6% shooting from the field last season.
Dillon Brooks Had To Be ‘Crazy’ To Get To Where He Is
Dillon Brooks is coming off arguably the worst season of his young NBA career since his rookie season. He had become integral to the Grizzlies in recent seasons until his actions last season. Brooks got in the face of every star player in the NBA and hurt his reputation to get a competitive edge.
Four-time champion Andre Iguodala called Brooks ‘crazy’, but in a positive way to commend his mentality.
“There’s certain guys in the NBA that wouldn’t be in the NBA if they didn’t have that crazy mentality. There’s a selfishness with which they view themselves If Dillon Brooks wasn’t crazy, he wouldn’t be in the NBA.”
Even if Brooks is not liked, he has the luxury of also being paid very handsomely. He signed a four-year, $80 million contract this summer with the Rockets after what everyone said was a bad year for him. But his mentality and spirit are enough to be of value to Houston.
