  • The center could help the young players on the squad with his experience
  • Howard most recently worked out with the Golden State Warriors

Center Dwight Howard is a legend for the Orlando Magic, having helped the team make the NBA Finals during the 2009 playoffs, and having spent his best years with the franchise. There is no doubt that Howard should have his jersey retired in the future.

Even though the former superstar is now playing overseas in Taiwan, he still wants another chance in the NBA. In fact, when speaking in a Twitter Space recently, Howard claimed that he wants to return and be part of the Orlando Magic.

“I would definitely want to come back and be a part of the Magic, their team and what they’re trying to accomplish in Orlando now…Would be a great [thing to be] in Orlando to finish out my career where I started it, and for the young and upcoming and promising team who I feel would need some type of veteran leadership. … I think it’ll be very beneficial to the players, to the city, to the organization,”

There is no doubt that it would be amazing to see Dwight Howard return to the franchise that drafted him. His experience could be helpful for the young team. Howard could also mentor young big men Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr., and provide general leadership for the squad as well.

During his last season in the NBA, Dwight Howard averaged 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers. He can be a solid big-man option for any team, and we’ll see if anyone decides to sign him going forward.

The Golden State Warriors Recently Passed On Signing Dwight Howard

Most recently, Dwight Howard worked out for the Golden State Warriors, but unfortunately, the big man did not get signed. Recently, the reason the Warriors passed on Dwight Howard has been revealed, with GM Mike Dunleavy noting the team has worked out many players during the summer.

“I would just say in general, we brought maybe 40 or 50 guys in this summer to get a further look at, knowing agents and people around the league knowing we’ve got two roster spots open,” Dunleavy said. “… The player you mentioned [Howard] is just one of many that we brought in and evaluated, and you know, I think right now you’ll know more about who we’re inviting to camp in a couple of days.

There is no doubt that Dwight Howard could have helped the Warriors with his rebounding and size. However, it is clear that the team decided to go in a different direction, and we’ll see how that works out for them going forward.

Dwight Howard Could Be A Solid Player On The Veteran Minimum

Dwight Howard could definitely still be an impactful player in the NBA, especially if he’s in a limited-minutes role coming off the bench. He is still relatively athletic and can finish in the interior and rebound.

Of course, teams clearly have reservations about Dwight Howard, and perhaps it is about his willingness to fit into a role. That is a fair concern about an older player who used to be a star.

However, Howard has shown that he’s willing to take a backseat to win at a high level before, and that is unlikely to have changed. He did just that to win the championship with the Lakers in 2020.

Hopefully, we do see Dwight Howard get another shot in the league at some point in the future. He at least deserves to try and stay in the league, but thus far an opportunity has not materialized.
