There is no doubt that modern players are continuously getting more versatile on the offensive end. Centers like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid are doing a lot of things guards and forwards do for example, and the game will keep evolving in that regard.

One of the more versatile big men in his prime was DeMarcus Cousins, who blended bully ball with a perimeter game. Recently, Myles Turner admitted that DeMarcus Cousins is the toughest player that he’s had to guard.

“From a physicality standpoint, DeMarcus Cousins was the hardest person I had to guard. He’s down there banging and shooting threes, handling sh*t.”

DeMarcus Cousins was absolutely dominant offensively in his prime, but unfortunately, he was stuck on some very poor Sacramento Kings teams. During his 470 games with Sacramento, DeMarcus Cousins averaged 21.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He was clearly before his time, and if Cousins was in his prime today, he would be one of the premier big men in the league.

Stephen A. Smith Believes DeMarcus Cousins Would Be A Top 5 Big Man In The NBA Today

Even though DeMarcus Cousins is currently playing basketball in Puerto Rico with the Guaynabo Mets, many believe that he could be a great player in the league today. In fact, analyst Stephen A. Smith believes that Cousins would be a top-five big man in the game today, noting that the league is ostracizing him.

“I don’t like how DeMarcus Cousins is being treated by the NBA, he’s still got game. DeMarcus Cousins right now would be a top-five big man in basketball. With his skill set, his body, his strength, his shooting ability, his basketball IQ, everything, he would be a top-five player. Even if you think he should’ve acted a certain way and not been acerbic, where’s forgiveness at?… This brother has game and doesn’t deserve to be in Puerto Rico playing basketball. You got people in the league ostracizing him because of a personality he once had.”

Though this is definitely a hot take about DeMarcus Cousins, it is fair to say that Cousins can still play a role for a team right now. Cousins is still a quality rebounder and interior scorer, and can at the very least be a backup center for any team.

DeMarcus Cousins Wants A Real Answer About Why He’s Not On An NBA Roster

DeMarcus Cousins has consistently tried to get on an NBA roster, but teams have simply not given him an opportunity. In fact, DeMarcus Cousins previously said that he wants a real answer to why he’s not on an NBA roster right now.

“That’s honestly my biggest issue… You never really get an honest answer… I look at myself first, and what I can do to better myself. I’ve asked many questions, I’ve reached out to former teams…I can never really get the raw honest truth. I would love to get a real answer.”

It remains to be seen if DeMarcus Cousins will get an opportunity in the NBA in the future. Any team would benefit from signing him to a veteran-minimum contract, and hopefully, he ends up getting back into the league.
