Recently, we saw Team USA shockingly lose in the FIBA World Cup to Germany, 111-113. This was definitely a shock to a lot of observers, as Team USA was widely viewed as the favorites to win gold ahead of the tournament. Now, the best they can get is Bronze, and that is if they manage to beat Canada on Sunday.

There is no doubt that a lot of people roasted Team USA after the loss. One of them was Noah Lyles, the world champion sprinter that attacked the NBA for calling their title winners “world champions”. We saw Lyles like posts on X/Twitter following Team USA’s elimination, with the posts suggesting that he was right about the NBA.

We also saw Lyles repost a meme of his famous quotes about the NBA with the final score from the FIBA World Cup game between USA and Germany. The repost has now been erased from Lyles’ page.

To be fair to Team USA, this wasn’t necessarily the best team that they could have fielded. If they were to send players like LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, and Kevin Durant to the tournament, then it is quite possible that they would have won. With that being said, the team cannot be crowned as world champions based on hypotheticals, and it is clear that Noah Lyles got the last laugh in this situation.

NBA Players Were Mad At Noah Lyles’ Comments

Even though Team USA lost in the FIBA World Cup, most people would agree that the United States-based NBA is still the best league in the world when it comes to overall talent. In fact, Tyrese Haliburton explained why players were mad at Lyles’ comments, pointing out that the NBA is still the best league, and claiming that he didn’t “understand the point” of Lyles’ comments.

“I really don’t understand the point of it because the NBA is the best league in the world. “It wasn’t the most intelligent response. We’re going to let that fly.”

Though the NBA isn’t necessarily an international league, the team definitely has the most gifted players. For a lot of international players, the goal is to one day to compete in the NBA. The NBA is also becoming a lot more global with every season, with players from all-around the world playing in the league and competing for championships.

Gregg Popovich Once Made Similar Comments To Noah Lyles

A lot of players disagree with Noah Lyles, but there are some within the league that have expressed similar sentiments to the sprinter. Once, Gregg Popovich explained why it makes no sense for an NBA team to call themselves world champions.

“It doesn’t make sense for an NBA team to call themselves world champions. I don’t remember anybody playing anybody outside our borders to get that tag. Isn’t that true? I keep waiting for somebody to tell me I’ve missed something.”

Gregg Popovich makes a good point here, and it is fair to say that there are solid arguments on both sides of the “world champions” debate. It is not something that will be settled anytime in the future, and we’ll see if Noah Lyles or anyone else speaks out on this topic again soon.
