When Rodman’s mother was home, she still didn’t give him any love, as she was rough and tough with him. The perfect example of this was when Shirley Rodman kicked her son out of the house since he didn’t have a job after he graduated high school.
The family moved to Oak Cliff, a crime-riddled section of Dallas, Texas, shortly after Rodman’s father left. This gave Rodman a lot of other problems to deal with.
Rodman dealt with bullies all throughout high school, as he was extremely shy. So, to combat the bullying and being poor, Rodman had to find a place to go and relax, to get away from the drama, especially after he was kicked out of his mother’s house.
Rodman found this place of relaxation on the basketball court. Every day, in fact, you could find Rodman at the local gym playing basketball. Not only did he love the game of basketball, but he was also quite good at it.
Rodman eventually enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, after playing a game of H-O-R-S-E with Lonn Reisman, an assistant coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Reisman could tell Rodman had real talent, and once in college, Rodman didn’t disappoint.
In three years at SOSU, Rodman averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game. Rodman was a three-time NAIA All-American while in college. This led to the Detroit Pistons selecting Rodman in the second round with the 27th overall pick of the 1986 NBA Draft.
By the time Rodman was in the NBA, he felt a sense of family, something he didn’t feel at home with his own family. His Pistons teammates were like his brothers, and Detroit’s head coach, Chuck Daly, acted as a father figure to Rodman.

So, the Bulls’ leader, Michael Jordan, went to Vegas to retrieve Rodman. There, Jordan found Rodman in bed with Electra.
“I do remember being in Vegas with [Dennis],” Electra said. “The party was starting right away. One thing about Dennis, he had to escape. He liked to go out. He liked to go to clubs. We’d go to his favorite restaurant. Then we’d go to a nightclub. Then we’d go to after hours. It didn’t stop. It was definitely an occupational hazard to be Dennis’s girlfriend. He was wild. But to be honest, I didn’t realize what the team’s schedule was. I didn’t know he took a detour.”
Rodman and Electra’s marriage would last only nine days before the two mutually agreed to end the marriage. The couple would later reconcile, although they would officially get divorced in 1999.

I think she saw a guy like, ‘Wow, he’s somewhat attractive, has a nice body.’ And besides all this, I think she saw me coming out and being free and I think that was more attractive to her than anything else.”

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, grew up a huge basketball fan, and especially a huge fan of the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls of the 1990s. This led to the North Korean leader wanting to meet the Bulls’ most colorful character.
In March 2013, Jong Un invited Rodman to Pyongyang to meet him for the first time. Rodman, along with three players from the Harlem Globetrotters and a few journalists from Vice, traveled to the country normally closed off to America to meet the North Korean leader.
The two immediately hit it off, and Rodman reportedly told the North Korean leader, “You have a friend for life,” after hugging him. This brought a wave of criticism to Rodman from the American media.
The fact Rodman was becoming great friends with a dictator didn’t sit well with the American media and public. Rodman didn’t like that the American media didn’t take the time to get to know the North Korean leader to understand who he was as a person.
Rodman would continue to visit the North Korean leader, including a trip in January 2014. This, of course, brought Rodman more criticism, especially during the time North Korea imprisoned Kenneth Bae, a South Korean-born American Evangelical Christian missionary, on charges of “hostile acts against the republic.”
The American government was calling for the immediate release of Bae on humanitarian grounds during this time, and Rodman’s visit stirred up a lot of trouble with the American media. This time, Rodman fought back, blowing up on his critics, apparently defending North Korea’s detainment of Bae.
“Kenneth Bae did one thing … If you understand what Kenneth Bae did. Do you understand what he did in this country? No, no, no, you tell me, you tell me. Why is he held captive here in this country, why? … I would love to speak on this,” Rodman said in an interview with CNN.
This led to Bae’s family criticizing Rodman, and Rodman later wrote a letter to Jong Un, asking for Bae’s release.
“My dear friend for life, Marshall Kim Jong Un,” Rodman wrote to start his letter to the North Korean leader. “I ask for your mercy to prisoner Kenneth Bae and would be eternally grateful for his safe return and make a big step towards bridging the gap between our two nations.”
Jong Un never formally responded to Rodman’s letter, but Bae was eventually released on November 8, 2014. Rodman believes his letter is what convinced the North Korean leader to release Bae.
When President Trump of the United States met with the North Korean leader and became the first sitting President to step foot in North Korea in 2019, Rodman broke down emotionally.
“It’s a great day,” Rodman said. “I am here to see it. I’m so happy.”
Rodman’s reach around the world goes beyond just that of North Korea. In fact, ‘The Worm’ isn’t just friends with the North Korean leader, he’s also supposedly friends with the leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin. He once called Putin a “cool guy.”
“They don’t know about American basketball, American football,” Rodman said about the Russian people. “I went over there to represent America as far as basketball is concerned.
“I’m not a politician, I’m just a basketball ambassador. That’s it.”
