Dennis Rodman is one of the most iconic NBA players of all time. On the court, Rodman was a demon, arguably the best rebounder the league has ever seen. Off of it, he was an enigma, dealing with a lot of issues from his younger years before going on to become one of the most radically expressive celebrities of the 90s.
There are many stories about Rodman, his unlikely friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is an excellent example of just how erratic Dennis is. Even when he was a part of one of the greatest teams in NBA history, the Chicago Bulls, he would often take off on vacations when he needed a break in the middle of the season, leaving his teammates to deal with the fallout before eventually returning and supposedly making them work.
But perhaps the most amazing story of Rodman’s crazy life is the fact that he once tried to marry himself. In 1996, at the peak of the Bulls’ dynasty, Rodman got into a wedding dress, claiming that he would marry himself.
(The 5th slide)
Rodman had started flirting with the idea of cross-dressing from quite a young age, something he opened up on in his memoir.
“I don’t remember the first time I decided to do it as an adult…It was more of a gradual thing, where it progressed from earrings and fingernails to halter tops and tight leather shorts.” He added, “When I cross-dress now, it’s just another way I can show all the sides of Dennis Rodman. I’m giving you the whole package. I’m becoming the all-purpose person.”
The same memoir, Bad As I Wanna Be, was the reason he pulled this stunt of him marrying himself. Many people tuned in to watch, and the book was a bestseller for months to come after Rodman married himself. Furthermore, he became an icon for many people to express themselves openly. Rodman has since described it as the beginning of the rockstar Dennis Rodman. To this day, it remains one of the wildest things an NBA superstar has done.
